Report from Bangkok Post dated Tuesday 22 March 2011 :- Do-it-yourself daily detox ================ Living in the polluted environment of a large city like Bangkok, you might think: What should I do for my health? You hear the word "detox" more and more nowadays, but what is detox? Basically, it means taking the toxins out. Then other questions come to mind: What is a toxin anyway and where did I get it from? Toxin means toxic waste that your body does not need and that needs to be removed. We can categorise toxins in our body into two types. First is the toxic waste from our cell metabolism, such as when you eat a meal and your body digests and absorbs the nutrients and metabolises them to create energy for your body. After our cells use up all the good nutrients during the metabolic process, the toxic waste in our body remains _ and it needs to be expelled. Other toxins in our body include contaminated chemicals in our food and the air we breathe, such as lead, mercury, heavy metal, pesticide, preservative agents and so forth. These are things that should not be in your body. So what should and can you do about these toxins? Actually your body is amazing; it can excrete toxins by itself. But your body has a limit on how much it can excrete of each toxin in one day. If we receive more toxins than we excrete, the remaining toxins will harm our body and our cells. So it is essential to maximise our body's capacity to excrete toxins every day. It makes more sense that since we receive toxins slowly, we should also get rid of them slowly. The way to help our body excrete toxin is called "detox". We get rid of toxic waste from the body mainly in four ways: bowel movements, urination, exhaling and sweating. Start with deep breathing exercises to exhale carbon dioxide and increase oxygen turnover in your cells. Daily bowel movements are also essential; they help remove toxic waste from your liver, which helps metabolise drugs and other chemicals. The liver excretes toxic waste through the bile and gets it out of our body though bowel movements, which is why our stools are yellow and brown in colour. Our kidneys also help our body get rid of toxins in our blood and excrete it in urine. To help our kidneys, we should drink plenty of water _ 1.5-2 litres per day. When we drink plenty of water, our blood is diluted more and our kidneys are working much more easily. When our blood is thick, it is more sticky and it's hard to get rid of any toxins. So when our blood is diluted, our kidneys' work with much less effort. The last main way to excrete toxins from of our body is by sweating. We always feel good when we sweat _ not only sweat from exercise but also sweat from steam in a sauna. In short, for your daily detox there are two processes. First, maximise your body's capacity to excrete the toxin; second, reduce the work load for your body by avoiding new contamination from toxins in your daily life style. Detoxing by yourself is simply a matter of exercising to sweat out the toxin, drinking plenty of water to help the kidneys better leech out the toxin by urination, eating more fibre to help bowel movements come out easily; and performing daily deep-breathing exercises to help increase your oxygen level and reduce carbon dioxide levels. You can also help reduce your body workload by simply choosing food better. For example, organic food is less contaminated by chemicals than normal food. And please eat alkaline food, such as vegetables and fruit, more than meat. When your blood receives nutrients, they can shift your blood level to an acid or alkaline state. Most of the toxins in your body are in the form of acids and when your blood is more alkaline, then the acid substances are easily excreted through urine. To make your blood become more alkaline, eat plant-based food, exercise, meditate and do deep-breathing exercise. This alkaline lifestyle can also help prevent cancer. Periodically through the year, it is a good idea to do a heavier detox, if you have some spare time. Three to four times times a year you should do a colonic detox to help your liver, undergo chelation to excrete the heavy metal toxins in your tissue, and have a Thai herbal steam sauna and massage to help release toxins from your tissue back into to the blood stream, and remove the toxins out via urination. A long holiday _ seven to 10 days once or twice a year in a nice, clean environment rural area _ would be a great escape to recharge your energy and reset your body. In rural areas, there is a greater oxygen concentration _ "fresh air" as we call it. You should have plenty of rest and relaxation and, please, choose organic food while you are there too. Most Thai people in rural areas grow their own vegetables, spices and fruits. All these organic home grown foods should be easily found in local markets. So if you use your body hard when you work, you should relax and detox your body daily too. Just as cars and engines need maintenance, so does your body. Please take care of your body so you have a longer period of good health and you enjoy a better and longer life ======================================= Sarunya Katanyuwong, MD, Dipl OM Acupuncture, Chinese Herbs and Formulas and Tuina massage, TRIA Integrative Wellness and Medical Institute
