Don't know if this post belongs here but...
Anytime I post a rental/tenant wanted on Craigslist, I get a flood of lengthy emails from people stating that they are currently in a foreign country (usually Africa) and that they are interested in renting my place. All they require is my name,address, bank acct, info, etc. They ask what type of payment is due and that they are ready to send payment.
The things that raises red flags are...
1) They are vague about which property they are talking about, usually "I want to rent your place, I love the area" instead of "Is the 1BD still available?"
2) They ask for photos even though the posting has multiple photos
3) They ask the payment details even though the posting has the info
4) They spend 75% of the email talking about how their boss will send payment and just need my acct info. 25% is some flowery email about themselves.
So, whats the deal with these scams?

Mostly Nigerians trying to scam either buyers or sellers.
They either claim that they want to buy your item and will send you the money by Western Union or Paypal.
Then you receive a false confirmation from Western Union (poorly done) that the money has been received from the buyer. You just ship the item and after 36 hours you get the money from Western Union.
Actually really stupid people those Nigerians, but probably a good amount of people fall for it...

what I've seen in the news is they send you a check for some extravagant amount like 30,000. 
Their company gave them the money to move everything over, but they only get one check and they want you to send 10,000 back so they can pay the shipper. 
Before your bank can flag the cashiers check they send you, they have cashed your check and disappeared into the ether. 
looking for gullible people who see the large number and forget that they are sending moeny to a total stranger.

They use your information to post these rentals under their name (i.e. final money going to them), and you get pissed off renters showing at your doorstep, requesting key to the rental they just paid for (usually 2-3 months rent paid in advance, and security deposit).
Or they use your information to present YOU as the scammer.
They wouldn't be doing it, if they didn't have enough dumb suckers falling for it. In fact, a friend of mine fell for one of the scams, and lost $1,500 -- and I was amazed, as it sounds like such an obvious scam as she was telling me about it.
