Has anyone ever heard of making free phone calls on the internet. I saw a friend of mine in BKk do it once about three years ago.

yahoo used to have one but it cut off after 5 minutes but then you could just re-dial. Instant Messenger has a phone call thing too but not sure of price.

Didn't test it yet with AIM or Mac accounts, but you can download for free iVisit 3.0a7 from http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/win/29800.
Its is a free beta software for text/audio/video chat, good for any Windows system. Seems that it should work if you have an AIM account (free as well) to connect with buddies.
What I have tested is that 56k connections are not enough for webcams but are Ok for audio.
Of course, your buddy must have another cpu and another AIM account...

I originally saw Skype written up in Bangkok Post, they gave it the all clear, however everyone should run AdAware and Spybot on their computer imo.

skype is NOT for free phonecalls... it's for free communication like you can do with msn messenger or netmeeting or icq...
so both parties need the program and preferably a fast internet connection...

I have been using SKYPE for many months now, great tool, working fine. Latest version propose calls to Fix Line (at very low rates). Calls between Skype users still free.
I also have Ad-Aware and Spy Sweeper and I never had any spy, hidden ad from Skype
