Maxxy i believe D-Tac is a good choice. Does anyone know if a SIM card can be bought at the airport in the arrivals lounge?

i am not aware of any shop at the arrival hall. just pop into the nearest 7-11 or family mart they will sell sim cards there!

Sounds good.. after running a search I was convinced that one could only buy a dtac sim card at Robinsons. Thanks for clearing that up.

DTAC can have problems with getting thru/reception - not surprising seeing the opposition, AIS is owned by the PM, - 1,2 call cards, - yes, AIS, are easy to buy, along with the number, MarBoonKrong sells them for about 700 baht, of which probably half is free calls - your number will "dissolve" dissapear whatever after 3 months if you dont replenish the thing - cards of 300 baht give you 3 months, 500 baht 6 months, or the 1500 baht card will keep you number active for a year - also you can call/text overseas with AIS,[1,2 call] not sure with DTAC -

Indeed you can call overseas, I called a friend yesterday and he said...Hi...but I'm not in Bangkok, I'm in Venezuala. Checked my balance after and it didn't seem to cost much for that info either.

My number never gets more that 12 months ahead in it's validity no matter how much I put on. My friends however goes up to 2 years ahead. Must the deal on the SIM when you bourght it.
