I live in the US and have a Ericsson T28 world phone. I had to call Voicestrem and set up a international access account. The phone works sometimes in Thailand thru AIS. Once I call the US my US phone number works for incomming calls.

yep, confirmed ais has opened their system to to be competitive with orange and dtac. so every asian or european gsm phone should work in thailand now. ia m ot sure about all of the us phones as most of them are using another frequency (1900 mhz) or aren't gsm phones.

Thanks for the verification.  As long as the US phone is tri sys GSM900/1800 and 1900, there should be no problem now that AIS has unlocked their system.  I plan on picking up a new Nokia 6310i which will provide coverage for pretty near all my SE Asia stops.  Too bad it won't work in Japan.....

well, if you are talking about coverage you have already with a your local farang number. the point is you can buy a prepaid card in thailand with a thai number and just insert the sim card in your mobile you bring from outside thailand. this will save you a lot money and makes you also reachable for the girls, who like to play with sms and chitchats on the mobile phones!

Was in LOS a couple of weeks ago.  Popped a DTAC Dprompt sim card for 300 baht into my Taiwan GSM phone, and it worked great.  The DTAC lady said that 300 baht gives you a nominal 30 minutes chat time in Thailand (no international service), and expires after 3 months if not topped up.

Great value.  On my previous trip, my hotel charged me more than that for 3 short local calls to mobiles.

(I think Taiwan has the same mobile phone setup as the UK, since my English friends use their Taiwan phones in the UK.)

Hey bros - dont know if this one has been answered but let me ask anyway.  I have a Nokia 8390 from the US.  When I get to BKK, can I buy a pre-paid SIM card and pop that into my phone and use it according to the # of minutes/baht I have bought?  Also, if someone wants to call me (from US) then they will be dialing my (new) Thai phone #, correct? and if someone in BKK wants to call me, then it is a local call for them.  And I will be able to dial internationally too (according to # of minutes/baht I bought the SIM card for).  Does this seem to cover everything?

That "might" only work if you phone is a world phone. If not, then I think you are out of luck. I believe you are on Cingular?? Or is it an new AT&T phone??

You can do it, But need to take your phone to MBK, and pay around 1500 bt, to have them alter the chip - to accept UK/thai numbers, - I've done this with a couple of Nokias from the UK. [not every shop does it, think the one I used was on the 4th floor maybe, or amongst all the mobile phone booths, and called "Cellular"].  You of course can buy a local pre-pay or 1,2 call phone for around 5000bt, and a large part of that you get back as free minutes.

where can these phones be bought?

ABC - It is a new AT&T Nokia phone.  Do you think it will work?  I do know that on my current plan, I will be "roaming" in BKK, so if I get/make a call, it will cost me $$$.  Also, I am sure the pretty little Thai girls will not be happy having to call the US to get me on my mobile in BKK (if they even call

KMan - you are making a more permanent move, so more options will be available to you.  I sent you an email, did you receive it?
