The "thai area code" is usually two digits, e.g., 01, or 06, 09, whatever, but DROP THE ZERO. Then the 7 digit phone number. Remember, if the thai "area code" starts with a zero, drop the zero when calling or sending SMS from The States.

If the number you are trying to call is: 09 XXX-YYYY You'd dial it: +66 9 XXX YYYY (note dropping the leading '0'.) *QUACK*

I use Yahoo messenger. Click on Mobile Phone picture. Put the number in dropping the first zero ie +666123456 etc Sends no problem at no cost. I use it regularly.

I have used http://www.telemessage.com successfully for ~ 8 months. I can successfully send SMS'es to dTAC, 1-2-Call/AIS and Orange mobile subscribers in Thailand. You can use an Outlook plug-in and/or a web-based interface. To the receiver it looks like the SMS came from your mobile (if you set it up that way) so that they can just hit reply and send an SMS back to your mobile phone. This service costs $0.10 (USD, that is, ten U.S. cents) per SMS, cheaper that what AT&T Wireless now Cingular charges me for an internaitonal SMS (25 cents). Also you could ask your friend to try and send you an SMS, so she would create an SMS and send it to +1 nnn nnn-nnnn (or replace +1 with 001 if finding the plus sign is difficult), then if you receive the SMS you can try to reply. I can send SMS'es from my pre-paid 1-2-Call phone to any phone in the world.

If you are AIS or 1-2-call, you can sign up with http://www.mobilelife.co.th and you can send SMS from the web page, and the messages will "come from" your Thai mobile phone. But to sign up there, you need to be able to read Thai or be good at guessing what it is asking you for.
