Mr Bill
Thks for tip Doc. Another question...condo screwed up my request and ordered me 256k DSL instead of the 2.5M now telling me I have to wait over a month to have it changed. If I get the 256k dsl for now, do I have to buy another dsl modem when I switch to 2.5M ? Also setting up wifi in the condo, can someone recommend a good wifi brand to use? Thanks.

Mr. Bill,

Not sure what's available in LOS, as I bought my wi-fi stuff in Amerika. I'm using one that connects via the USB port on my laptop. It's a D-Link brand device. The major brands like NetGear, D-Link, Linksys all have very good quality transponders in their devices. RF technology is as much of an art as it is a science (based on experience I've had with some very good people in this field), and these companies have some top quality RF scientists working for them.

So you can't go wrong with those. One thing you may want to consider for the device: my antenna (small rectangluar thing about 2 inches long) will either plug directly into the USB port in the back, which orients it horizontally out the back of the laptop, or into a base unit. The base unit is simply a small pod on the end of a meter-long cable; the cable is very thin (about a millimeter) and has a male USB connector. The pod has a female USB socket, which the male connector on the USB antenna plubs into. This allows the antenna to be placed up to 1 meter away from the laptop in an upright position.

While seemingly a small thing, it can make a very big difference, as the screen on the computer and other obstacles (walls, furniture, roofs) can have a very big impact on the antenna if it's just stuck directly into the USD port of the laptop. We've tested this setup in various wi-fi hotspot in Amerika and BKK, and also in my apartment in Amerika, where I was piggybakced on someone's wi-fi server, lol, until they implemented password protection (then I went to cable modem, lol). We've also used Skype via this wi-fi setup.

So I recommend one of those major brands, and if you can get it, one with a base unit extender -- the extender will add a little bit to the price, but it makes a big difference, from what I've experiened, and it's small enough to pack easily.

Most of the D-Link (or similar) stuff is available in Thailand.

Check out the specialized shop in the Fortune IT Mall. I think 3rd or 4th floor in the quiet section towards the hotel.

And with that as my que, I'd like to slip in a word of praise for Fortune Town IT as a viable option for Pantip.

There's been a noticeable upgrade in the software vendors' places in the past couple of months. Software for PC/Mac/Linux is all available.

Maybe the most complete selections of DVD movies and MP3 music CD's to be had in the city. I even found one shop last week that has a wall-to-wall classical music selection- and all it seemed to be legit- which was imported from China and/or Japan.

Hardware shops are very diverse as well- even two Apple vendors.

Getting to Fortune from Sukhumvit is also a snap- take the Subway to Phra Ram 9 exiting at #2 do a dog-leg out and back around the escalator exit and you'll walk right into the mall.

I'd like to second the praise for Fortune Town IT Mall for all the same reasons, as well as less gues trying to pressure you into buying 'sexy movies'.

Much nicer place.

Dr. von Quack!
