AIS extends validity period on new card
Published on July 19, 2006

Advanced Info Service Plc (AIS) is offering a one-year call validity period to subscribers of its Sawasdee Thua Thai prepaid SIM card.

Normally, its validity period is the same as the refill value - for example, customers get a validity period of 50 days if they top up by Bt50.

For the new promotion, which started yesterday and runs until August 15 subscribers will get a one-year validity period regardless of the refill value and the remaining validity.

AIS is Thailand's largest mobile-phone operator with more than 16 million subscribers.

Last month, the second-largest operator, Total Access Communication (DTAC), introduced a prepaid package featuring a one-year validity period.

Under the promotion, DTAC has offered a new SIM card called Simple for Bt199. It features a flat rate of Bt2 per minute and gives subscribers up to a year to use the time they purchase.

Usually, prepaid refill cards are valid from a few days to three months, depending on the promotion.

DTAC has about 10 million customers and expects two million new subscribers this year.

The third-largest operator, True Move, followed suit early this month by launching a prepaid package featuring a two-year validity.

True Move has targeted the service at customers who make limited calls, but they must make a call at least once every 90 days to keep the account valid.

True Move has 4.9 million subscribers, of whom 4.4 million are prepaid users.

Industry analysts view these promotions as telecom operators moving away from the price war that has caused jams in network connections.

They have also been in response to rules expected to be issued by the National Telecommunications Commission later this year.

One clause bans operators from setting fixed validity periods for all prepaid services. This is to prevent companies from urging subscribers to quickly use up their minutes before their cards expire.

In summary you can now have a AIS (1-2-Call) or Dtac pre-paid number valid for one year no matter how small the recharge compared to before where maintaining a number for that long would require you to spend 1000++ baht per year.

True Move is valid for 2 years but you must make at least a one minute call every 90 days to maintain it so for those visiting Thailand only once or twice a year Dtac or 1-2-Call would be the better choice.

YMMV but with all the problems lately with connecting at peak times Dtac seems to be the best choice from what l hear others say but with these new promotions there's no reason why you couldn't have a SIM from each company as they no longer cost a fortune to maintain.

I was able to charge up my Happy Dprompt card and switch the promotion all online via the links in the previous posts. My calling rate went from 1 baht per minute to 2 baht per minute. I had to have a friend buy me a 100 baht card and e-mail me the numbers. Then I charged it up online. Only problem was that it didn't immediately add the 1 year extension. I checked the next day and everything was fine. Cool deal!

I always call 1175 for customer service, and switch to the different plans when leaving or coming back.
