I am a "way non techie" as my daughter says.

I may want to use in places unlikely to have wireless "hotspots" and I want to know more about ways to stay online with things such as AIR CARDS, EDGE and other such options as via my mobile etc.

I dont have a clue what is best or actually works. Given that it will be in Thailand in non wireless areas is this possible? and also any advice is welcome. Thanks.

And Skip.....your thoughts are especially welcome...........

LOL This is great timing, bro. As I was hanging out in an Apple Store last night I thought of you. Then this morning, they just upgraded the MacBook Pro line. Now available with 4GB's of RAM! Whoo! Hoo!!!!

So you want to know more about ways to stay online, do you? Well, in that case, the impetus falls on you, Jack. Your daughter calls you "WAY non-techie" because of your malaise. Time to lose it.

Seems to me a bit of inquisitiveness on your part would do you a world of good. Since connectivity is your biggest issue just get a Mac. The Apple does all manner of networks and does it far better than Windoze.

Seriously bro, just figure out what you wanna spend, then plan to buy the model with the most amount of RAM that comes close to the $weet $pot. All the rest will fall into place in good time....

I agree. I work a lot with large image files and when I bought my first highly recommended PowerBook G4; four plus years ago I simply hated it. It was upgraded to the max at time of purchase but was still very slow. When I buy electronics I always get the most beefed up version available. I called it my; ‘WeakBook’! And the arcane filing system of Iphoto really pushed me over the top. Apple had good ideas but their antiquated architecture bogged things down to a crawl. It turned out to be a very cool and expensive ‘JukeBox’; Itunes is great!

I then built my own PC which I named; ‘Speed-Demon’ and brought it to Thailand. Why? Because I wanted to choose my own components and to deal with folks who speak English and I find shopping here in LOS is not always easy. Don’t even get me started about this subject.

My son who is a devoted Mac addict kept telling about the new generation of Macs last year and reluctantly I started to look at them.

In November 2006 I checked prices here in LOS and then on my annual visit to the US I purchased a Beefed up MacBook Pro. This version was not even offered here at the time; but is now.

Now I hate my ‘Speed-Demon’ PC because Apple fixed all the things that bugged me before; although I still won’t go near Iphoto; Nope, nada, no way!

I wish I could get an up-graded version for IE; which I only use for internet banking within Thailand with BKK Bank; they are married to IE when it comes to transfers and the only available version for Mac does not work. When I mentioned Firefox and Mac; their eyes get glassy and they say they do not support Macs.

This new machine ; the MacBook Pro is a laptop on steroids; it is like having a powerful desktop in a shopping cart! I just love it!

That's unfortunate, because if you use iPhoto properly, you never even need to interact with the filing system (which is why, I guess, it is arcane, since it's not meant to be touched by the user.

What specifically do you need to do which requires direct access to the filing system? iPhone can fit all your needs, if you let it.

JumpinJack- Check this out: nuTsie It's an application that'll allow you to stream your entire iTunes music library to your cellphone.

Imagine that. Then imagine you'd bought a Mac, conjured up some resolve and suppressed your apathy / PCphobia /intimidation by machine enough to get this thing Rocking & Rollin' on your cell. Then just imagine your daughters response. She'd be overcome by your hepness, dude!

And the best part of it all? Mac's make it nearly effortless.

With the PowerBook G4 Iphoto duplicated and I swear even triplicated my images, then it put them into files ‘somewhere’ on the system with file names like for example; 05- click on 05 and 14, 17, 20 open up; click on 20 and 16,15, 18 open; click on 16 and now finally I can see the image files. Then there were ‘Originals’ and what I guess were copies of the Originals. I would have three different images with the same file name. It took me forever to find an image file when I let Iphoto handle it. Now I use other programs that I understand and am a happy camper. I probably was doing something wrong but the folks at Apple admitted to me more than once that the filing system that Iphoto uses is arcane. I don’t know if it has changed or not but I get along perfectly fine by not using it.

I want to control where my images are stored on the HD and with names and dates that make sense to me; with Iphoto I could not do that. Also I still use the PC for some things that I cannot do with the MacBook and I want the file folders to look the same on both machines.

You don't get it, clearly.

iPhoto does allow you ful control how you want your photos organized - use the Albums and Smart albums, and renamed rolls and organize by rolls and albums. It's incredibly easy, and it can be organized by dates, by keywords, or albums, or any criteria you wish.

Wanna access one of your pictures, and move it into a folder to duplicate and give to someone? Just drag it from within iPhoto to the desktop. Drag it from within iPhoto into an email message. Drag it from within iPhoto to a recordable CD, or into Toast. Damn, man, it couldn't be easier -- the organizational capabilities just don't require to have constant access to the 'originals' * (hint: in the digital age, every copy is as good as the original) *

iPhoto always keeps your original unaltered image, and each time you make a change to an image, it maintains a copy (behavior that you can alter to only keep the latest version and the original).

The problem with most people who think the same way as you do, is that they are unwilling to unlearn bad habits, and adapt to a better workflow, and a more refined way of doing things.

How do I send emails of a bunch of pictures? I select them, I click on iPhoto's 'email' link, and select which sizes I want to pictures to be. Done!

What could possibly require you to insist on an organization as you outline it (except for being anal?)

David: I can do all of the things you mention above with Adobe Lightroom. It works with virtual copies of any corrections that leave the original files unaltered; * (hint It is called 'Non Destructive Editing' I believe.) *

Daffy: iPhoto always keeps your original unaltered image, and each time you make a change to an image, it maintains a copy (behavior that you can alter to only keep the latest version and the original).

David: Just like Lightroom! I can do that with Adobe Lightroom as well as make as many different virtual copies of the same image and stack them too.
It integrates seamlessly with Photoshop and is fast.

Daffy: The problem with most people who think the same way as you do, is that they are unwilling to unlearn bad habits, and adapt to a better workflow, and a more refined way of doing things.

David: I guess that is why I spend so much time learning about workflow as it relates to photography and being a beta tester for Lightroom from day one and finally shelling out the money to purchase it after it was released. It is a program that was developed by photographers for photographers. With workflow in mind.

Daffy: What could possibly require you to insist on an organization as you outline it (except for being anal?)

David: First of all I am anal; I like being anal and if I am so delighted with what I am using as opposed to the nightmare that Iphoto created for me then why the rant? Why let Iphoto import my images into places unknown to me and then triplicate them when I am just as happy not using it?

You earn your living with Mac's so I can understand where you are coming from; but I don't earn my living with Mac's and I don't have anywhere near your level of expertise with them. You are probably correct in saying that If I would put more effort into Iphoto then I might like it, but I am not going to. Do Aperture users use Iphoto too or is it a stand alone that does what Iphoto does and more? What about Adobe Lightroom users; do they use Iphoto too or are they just content using Lightroom and Photoshop?

Like a lot of other threads this one has certainly drifted off topic too. I do not want to get into a pissing contest with anyone over what software they use for their photography. I could care less and it certainly is not my place to judge someone simply because they do not use what I do.

All you needed to say was that you were a professional photographer, which drastically changes the advice I would give - and would skew it heavily towards Lightroom or Aperture, and away from iPhoto.

iPhoto is great for amateur digital cameras (the kind I wield) and keeping those organized. It is woefully inadequate for profesional criteria (which involves editing RAW files). Lightroom is the better tool (albeit I am philosophically inclided towards Aperture, as I know it is getting better - and integrates quite well with iPhoto).

I summary - thanks for explaining your reasoning, and for your application, Lightroom is the better tool.
