one EMF wave & all the data on your HDDs is gone forever

even a good bump can wreck them

What the f*** are you on about LY? What a stupid thing to say. Thats like saying 'one stroll in front of a moving bus & your life is gone forever'

What are the chances that is going to happen? Or do you live under a high voltage transmission line, or keep electromagnets beside your PC?

With HDD prices so low, it's easy to get a couple of 1 or 1.5 Ts, slap them in a toaster, back up, remove and viola...
Yeah, I saw a 1T external for about 4,000 B. Amazing!

Yes, a WD Essential 1TB - THB 3,990 baht.

On the second floor (the main food court) opposite the software/DVD sellers.

Busitek (4th floor) sells them for 4,150 baht.

I paid 3,690 baht for an internal WD 1TB this week (still got a few bays left).

maybe you don't understand the mechanics of a Hard Disk Drive, one good bump & they are f***ed

& most people keep electromagnets next to their computer, they are called speakers

I got a new 640 GB Sunday for 2,500b & I was surprised at how they were handling the drives at the shop. The salespeople obviously don't know how easily those things can get damaged

Modern drive mechanisms are far more shock resistant than in the olden days.

Just a note of warning -- hard drive prices will significantly increase over the next 30-60 days, starting next week. Seagate will be raising their prices worldwide, to offset their losses, and the remaining manufacturers will follow suit shortly thereafter.

Seagate might think in the same lines as bargirls or bar owners.

the laptop (2.5") drives seem to be pretty solid
but I still don't trust the 3.5" drives to be very sturdy to an impact

When it rains it pours.... Picked myself up an 8GB flash drive for 505 bt while I was at Panthip yesterday. Up and left it in one of the True net cafes PCs a few hours ago over at Fortune IT mart. Buh-bye!

Dropped by Panthip today to replace the blank discs, which they did without protest. The guy followed BK's advice and inspected the backside of each for signs of tracks- there were none.

For starters, 3.5s are generally much more reliable that 2.5s and you cannot (yet) get the capacity on 2.5s to rival the 3.5.
It also takes more than "one good bump" to trash a drive these days.. most auto-park the heads when idle for a few seconds and generally have a reasonable (not great) impact rating.

Also, like anything, it is not a question of IF if fails, just a matter of WHEN it will. Proper care and feeding, the drives should be good for a few years...

LY... if you had read the post, I mentioned toasters... I back up, remove the drive and pack it away until I need a new one. I also replace the drives every 2-3 years anyway given the capacity changes, falling prices, etc. So it is a matter of being smart about how you manage your data and machinery.

Also, the magnets inside most computer speakers are so weak that unless you take the disc out of the machine, place it inside the speaker cabinet then maybe, just maybe, a few bytes could get garbled. Your changes of HDD corruption are far higher due to power failures than EMF.
