....or, just go ahead and pay 1000/month a la carte.

Enjoy.

You don't need to sign up, and you can cancel anytime (it does auto-renew if you don't cancel) - and you can cancel via an SMS shortcode (no, you do not need to go to an office to cancel). You can also just call their customer service number, but the short code works well.

Magnum - there *is* 3G in Thailand. TRUE, and some of the other carriers are running 'experimental' service on the 850MHz bandwidth.

TRUE has it available in, as stated earlier, along the Sukhumwit corridor, in Hua Hin, Pattaya, Phuket. Elsewhere, you get regular GPRS service.

Then again, you don't pay for 3G service right now - with TRUE it's free with the regular GPRS service.

Most of the carriers also have a 49 Baht / day plan, which you need to renew daily (also via short code), which works well, but is a hassle. I prefer just paying the 799 Baht and being done with it (or 699, if you don't need the roaming WiFi access via TrueWifi hotspots).

A year ago I purchased Happy's 7-day unlimited data package for 249 baht.

My first attempt this trip was with a iMobile 3GX card from 7-11 across from Gullivers. No service... shop girl tried in her phone and got the same result. So much for my attempt at getting a 3G data connection.

So exchanged the iMobile SIM and a couple of top-up cards for a Happy SIM and same.

Called service number to sign up for the weekly package. Turns out they don't have that promotion any more. They now have either hourly packages or monthly unlimited.

Suggested I go with the 50 hour package; especially since when signing up there was a 100 hour bonus. Package is supposed to run for 38 months; but if you have no baht in your account the service gets canceled.

Happy has what they call shortcuts to turn on and off EDGE so you won't get billed for every hour with a smartphone that is continuously polling the network. The shortcuts are just phone numbers to dial and an SMS is sent back to confirm the request.

No matter what I tried I couldn't get an EDGE connection. I had it working with Happy a year ago so I knew something must have changed. Turned out it was a Tethering profile I had installed to enable ATT tethering on my jail broken iPhone. It would reset the network APN settings for ATT on every network reset or reboot. After uninstalling the profile and resetting the network, the EDGE icon appeared and I was good to go. Only inconvenience is that every time I dial the shortcut to enable EDGE, I have to do a network reset before the EDGE connection can be enabled.

I am staying at a new place this trip; the 3-month old Shama Serviced Apartments between Soi 2 and 4. Wifi access is free, but it is horribly slow and not stable. (They are using Airport Express base stations by the way.)

It was so bad today that I created a wifi hotspot from my iPhone's Happy EDGE service using the MyWi app and connecting my laptop to it. I am getting only about a 200k download speed but at least it is stable.

Edit: Corrected download speed - I was measuring it incorrectly.

If you see how stuff is wired, this would come as no surprise. Sounds like the DSL connection has plenty of cross-talk, or is simply badly connected. I doubt you'll have any luck getting the hotel to fix it, unless you show the hotel's internet kid a couple of good porn sites that require high bandwidth

At 2 AM, I told the desk about the issues with wireless. They sent a tech guy up to look. After watching me try to connect, he pulled this wooden box out from under the TV. I had not noticed it before and had assumed a shared access point was out in the hall somewhere.

They had a 3Com wireless router enclosed inside a wood box with no air space to cool it. He restarted it and it still made no difference. Told him I would check again in the morning.

So I rebooted it again a few minutes later, and moved the ethernet cable to a different port. Bingo.

My guess is that the router overheated.

But now the room looks like a disco lit up with the flashing blue router lights. I wonder where I can find some black electrical tape.

You could try the hardware shop next to Robinson's at Suk Soi 17. Alternatively, there's a hardware section on the 5th level of the Emporium.

Any stickers would work. It doesn't have to be electrical tape. There are sticker sellers every 50m down Sukhumvit....lolol. Get some nice "Hello Kitty" stickers.
