While substandard products are available in all countries, it's good to remember quality goods -- and service -- are to be had in those very same markets, sometimes cheek-by-jowl with the inferior vendors. In Singapore, that mecca of stringent rules and regulations, I once bought a Fuji camera from Sim Lim Square and that thing conked out in less than a year. On my next trip I took it back to that shop and he promptly threw up his hands and shooed me off, asking me to contact the company instead. I thought normally you took back the troublesome thing to the dealer from whom you bought, but no sir no no no. So after several telephone calls I got through to Fuji and they told me I must visit their service centre which I gathered was many good miles away. On top of that, the lady told me, I would have to pay a fast track fee (if I wanted it back in a hurry) besides another fee to just look into the thing and assess the problem. Bye, bye, lady, I had bought the camera for SGD 300 and your service deal is already totting up to another good sum if you included the cab fares. On my next trip to Bangkok I took the camera to Data IT in Pantip. The girl there gave me the address of Fuji service centre plus directions on how to get there by BTS. Off I go there and they ask me to wait in their airconditioned lounge while they assess the problem ( no charge, mind you). Then they inform me it would cost me around 1600 baht to replace a bad sensor. Also it would take 15 days. I told them I was leaving the next day but could I leave it with them and pick it up after 3 months ? Sure, sir. Three months later I collected it. It is working fine until today, and that was at least 5 years ago. I admire Thai efficiency and customer-orientation. From Pantip I also picked up a laptop in 2005 which is still serving me very well. My faith in Thai sales and service remains very strong.

And how much did your iPhone cost iDuck... how much without a contract? I am sure I could buy three or four of these phones for the same price and with little difference from what you got. There is a difference in having numbers ringing through and having actual access. To forward my SingTel number to say, Thailand or the US, is more expensive then just receiving the call directly on my phone. Again being able to carry that 'home phone number' along with you is, in my mind invaluable. So keep your fookin overpriced 'bling-phone' and I will take cheap and good to the bank. BTW iDuck, do you still wear those flashy gold chains around your neck when you go out on the town.... so 20th Century...

Quote: from S M E G M A on 3:39 pm on Oct. 25, 2011 Here is one way http://www.line2.com/ - that I have not tried myself.
Smegs... this is a service reseller like Vontage or Skype. However it seems to be restricted to US numbers and unlike Skype you can set up a number in say.... the UK. Unfortunately, only 23 countries allow Skype to assign numbers and Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, PI, and Indonesia are not among them. Therefore to keep in touch with my clients and friends in Singapore I need my SingTel SIM...

Quote: from Blonk on 7:49 pm on Oct. 25, 2011 Not sure if iPhones allow skype?
When they first came out it was specifically prohibited by agreements with AT&T, now not so sure. However unless your iPhone is rooted (jailbroke, etc) you would have to download from Apple's App store at this point I believe it is not available. Lucky you that Skype works on your phone, for some reason it will load to my China Phone but will not log in... it seems to be a Foyo issue with Skype. But I have other options, such as unlimited calling to 23 major countires for S$10 PM via SingTel...

WTF are you talking about???? I *never* wore any jewelry, and especially no "gold chains" around my neck. Damn, CS, do you have some kind of competition going with how many things you can get wrong, because so far, you're scoring nearly 100%.

Your admirable lack of doing the minimum research before posting yet more incorrect information is fascinating... Skype has been available for over a year on iPhone, and the lasts version even includes video calling. Looking forward to your next inaccuracies.

I didn't have to wait long, it seems....

I'd say that you're an idiot, at this point, but I understand that your continuous ability to get nearly everything wrong simply stems from your total lack of familiarity with any modern technology... though I fail to understand why a dinosaur like yourself insists on chiming in on everything, when it's obvious you don't have a clue. I have actual access on each number on my iPhone - calling out, the call comes from the local number, and receiving incoming calls doesn't cost me a dime either, because I'm not doing a forward, but have an actual number.

I paid the regular price for my unlocked off-contract iPhone, $750. The point is that I do not *need* to buy 3-4 other phones, and I have a device that actually works for what I need to do with it (I use it for more than just making phone calls, which appears to be all you need yours for, missing the point of what a smartPhone can be used for). Please, let's hear your next monumental error...
