and the great thing about Thai mobile phones, even the pre-pay card phones, is that like anything in LOS, for a price, TPE can get a trace of all calls made when and where !  " 1,2,Call " probably the best system, [AIS] you can text/call overseas plus receive, and top up cards at all 7/11s, if you buy 1500 baht worth, will keep the number open for up to a year -

I went to MBK today to buy a sim card for the missuses phone. Before going there I asked at 2 shops in Silom and they wanted 800 baht with no credits for any calls. The first stall in MBK wnated 450 with 100 credit and the second stall wanted 350 with 100 credit, so I got this one.
As a bit of interest, I went scurrying about checking out all the new numbers available, I was thinking of getting a new one for myself, something tricky. I wanted lots of 9's and a 6 or two in there somewhere. I found the numbers 99966999 and 99999969 available, the last one with the 69 in it appealed greatly. I asked about prices for these numbers and was quoted 990,000 baht for 69 number and a much more reasonable 150,000baht for the first one. I still have my boring old number.

Yes MBK probably best place.
Would recomend DTAC or AIS, best
roaming and ( dekkning what the f.. is that in english)
Anyway bought new sim with easy number for 50 BHT
and as previous post says no limit for sexy numbers.
Just walk around and look at the lists.
Convert your old phone (100 BHT) or buy a used one.
For a lot of phones it is also possible to install 2 or 3
sims and switch between providers.

slightly off-topic but just thought I'd mention that the reason those particular numbers are that expensive is because the number 9 is a special lucky number in Thai numerology. And you know how much money some of these people are willing to invest in their superstitions..
Same goes for license plates for cars. A Thai friend of mine had a nice car with a license plate of two Thai letters (don't remember which ones) and the number 9. He said he/his dad had paid 150,000 Baht for the license plate. But with a plate like that, traffic cops assume you're someone important and won't make the mistake of stopping you for running a red, speeding, pulling an illegal u-turn or anything like that.
