I agree with Smegma... there are better options, with more flexibility... and the iPod battery dies after a year and a half of constant use - replacement almost as expensive as new unit.

WRONG!

There are cheaper options, but certainly not better options, and once you start using an iPod, you will understand that. It's not just about having the 'MP3 player', but rather how well it works with iTunes, and the music store (though the music store is academic in Thailand).

Also, the iPod's batteries do NOT die afte 18 months, as some disgruntled user campaign tries to make you believe. I've had my iPod going on 3 years now (original, 5 and 10 gb models) and they still hold 10 hours charge - and I use them every day.

Lastly, you can get AppleCare for $59, which covers all aspects of the iPod, including the batteries, for 3 years. Money well spent.

I respect your intention to bring alternatives to people's attention, but please do not needlessly tear down on product when doing so, particularly when the information is not entirely correct.

By the same token you say that FB is wrong by him saying that there are better options and you say that IPOD is the best option.... well, one could also say you are wrong. So? How do we resolve this impasse? You have going against you the famous avid die-hard biased fanaticism for which Apple users are known.

I have played with the IPOD, and I still prefer my ARCHOS -for now. The user interface is the easiest as it just behaves as an external hard-disk when connected to the PC (windows based) -and you can have there anything you like and in any format.

I would say IPOD might be the best alternative for MAC users. But for Windows users, I bet nothing beats the ease of the Archos.

The Ipod looks cute and trendy and it is the cool thing to have. But I go for ease, versatility and ruggness. At least for now. IPOD to me comes accross as a bit delicate.

Anyway, for those who want specs, here are links from ebay on those two:

Impasse, indeed. I guess agreeing that I am the absolute authority on the subject, and thus agreeing that I am 100% right, at all times, is out of the question, right?

Seriously, my 'WRONG' applied mostly to the statement that the battery only lasts 18 months, and that it's a pain to replace - when this is simply not so. As I stated, my going on three year old iPods are still keeping their charge for 10 hours, and have NO problem whatsoever.

Furthermore, the new 3G iPods have the option of shopping for a third party battery replacemnet ($59), or to purchase AppleCare extension of the warranty for $59.

Tru dat - but do bear in mind, there's a reason to be fanatical, if the products you use work so very well. I hardly see people get all fanatical over using a product that works worth crap, and that actually doesn't work as advertised, or as promised.

The Archos has the flexibility of being able to drop anything on it, and it will handle it - but have you ever used iTunes? The key to the popularity of the iPod does not lie in the ease of it's user interface, but that it is, in fact, iTunes on the Go! Once you start using iTunes, you get very addicted to how easy it makes it to organize your music -- and then when you want to take it with you, you just synch it all up. Since the iPod does this at FireWire speed, 10 gigs of music takes roughly 2-3 minutes to transfer.

Well, on the Mac side, that's no contest. On the PC side, compared to the plethora of other payers, I would agree. The Archos is well designed. My point is simply that I gauge tha value of an MP3 player by the quality of the software on the PC's side that it works with. MusicMatch, I hate to say, is not an ideal solution. Sorry, but I'm zealous about iTunes

Gotha - for what it's worth, my 5gb iPod goes with me several times a week to the Gym, and I take it along jogging -- it's never failed me yet, and the 20 minutes skip protection contributes to that. It just reads everything into RAM, and plays it from there - rarely accessing the hard drive.

So, not sure how rugged you want it, but mine works very well for me, and has done so for nearly three years. I don't plan on upgrading, but may do so when Apple releases the 4g iPods.

hzink :

Dont mean to cause a stink, but:

Battery info comes from Newspaper articles, web-reviews, and those disgruntled customers - later confirmed by vendors at Panthip who sell the things.

This disgruntllement caused apple to change its policy... and charge another $60USD (2,500b) for a guarantee ??

Like you say, iTunes is academic in Thailand. Great marketing, that.

My main dislike of the iPod is that you cant use it as a general HD... ie, I can duck over to Smeg's place tonight, and not only swap 20gb of songs, but also 10gb of porn.

Just my 2 saleung's worth

What do you mean? Have you used it? I use my iPod as a HD, for copying files from Mac to Mac (those with firewire that is). It's a great external HD since you don't even need a power supply, it gets it from the computer directly.

Other arguments still stand

hzink, your reply is very well reasoned..... and no, I have not used itunes. My only real experience with the IPOD is as stand alone MP3 player. The experience when syncronizing was limited -I didn't like it, but it was so limited an experience that may not be a fair one.

BTW, my first PC was a MAC. But.... then market forces drove me away from Apple.

On versatility, sadly with most people having windows PC, I think the ARCHOS is more likely to be able to be used as a portable HD - I go and connect it to any PC anywhere.

On another matter, the Apple-Pepsi ad I thought was brilliant.

sorry works perfectly well as a drive on a pc

as a person who owns a ipod and an archos 20g drive I must say that the ipod wins hands down

yes its got a battery problem but as I see that one that just looks like a bad case of media management
as previously stated the archos didnot have the lenght of continious playing time as the ipod

yes the ipod is sexy stylish the archos for want of a better phrase looks like its been built from bits from tandy

the ipod is beating everybody hands down at the moment and archos looks like the only people that might come up with an alternative

so its up to archos to take note an produce a reply

I own an ipod.

BK people mean when they say that the ipod cannot be used as a generic hard drive is this...

...you cannot take your ipod over to your friends house and transfer your music collection to his pc.... (or his music collection to your pc)

...this is because...

(1) you need to install drivers and software to work the ipod

(2) and that software will not allow you to copy the mp3s from your ipod to your friends MAC (or pc)

The Iriver can certainly do this... no need for drivers and no limitations on uploading... no need to put your player into data mode...

For more information on these players go to...

StuckIAP, I defer to you on the comparison of those two as you won both.

However, not that ARCHOS does have already a new product that does much more than the IPOD: the 80GB AV300 Video Recorder. Not only can you carry music with you, but also your movies and more. It does a lot of things - you can even attach contraptions that do other things

Check it out here:
