Good point ABC! You don't want to bring a whole bagge of VCD/DVD back to the US. You will get into trouble with the Immigration. I have friends from China who got into tourble for bring in too many VCDs. I would suggest that you throw away all the covers and packaging.

Your DVD player on personal computer will be able to decode any type of VCD and DVD.

I brought back the "whole bunch of DVDs" in my luggage.  This included the DVD boxes.  I figured what heartless Customs (not immigration, BTW) Agent would make me throw out DVDs for my kids.  But since I've never, ever been searched (tested once, but never searched) entering the USA, it seemed long odds I would get stopped this time.

And not all DVDs/VCDs will play on your computer.  I've mainly had problems with the VCDs.  And I have a Macintosh and a Compaq with DVD drives.  I think it depends on what sort of format they were copied from.  These VCDs worked fine on the same DVD player but different (PAL) TV we had in Thailand.

Interesting. I have no problems with the VCD's playing on either my computer or DVD player at home. But the DVD's are the problems since if they do not have the all regions or region 1, my dvd rejects them.

The import tax back to the US is so low now ( and still falling) that when I returned from Bangkok last September through LAX, I was the only person on the plane who declared anything. I had about $4,000 in clothes and aound 100 computer discs. the import tax was less than $30 !!!!..and the agent didnt both to check my baggage ( I had them on the counter ready to open). When I joked with the guy that 10 years before I had a lot more tax on a lot less merchandise, he commented on the fact that import tax was dropping so fast ( free trade !!!!!) that it was no longer even worth their while to even ask. So.. Unless you are on some watch list, look really suspicious, comming back from Columbia with no luggage just a large canvas bag,or some drug dog sniffs you out.... you shouldnt have a problem

I always stop at customs, tell them what I have (a bunch of DVDs and CDs, and various electronics and clothes) and the guys seem more concerned about agricultural items, and just wave me through. Just make sure you don't try to hide anything, and be up-front.

Another good thing to invest in is one of those multiregional/multiformat DVD players. They play any DVD/VCD from any nation whether its NTSC/PAL/SECAM, whatever.
A Google search will lead to a wealth of info about them and places you can buy them. I got one over a year ago (brand name Sampo) for about $130US and it works like a champ. Plays any disc from anywhere.

Currently, you can pick up a comparable player (brand name: CyberHome) for under $60 - I paid $49 for mine.

Plays all regions, all formats.
