Quote: from DaffyDuck on 12:20 pm on Nov. 16, 2011 It's unfortunate, but you don't "get" it.
all will be revealed to you once you finally get the iPhone 4S, and luckily you'll get more out of Siri than we do

Apple is at work on not one but two updates to iOS5, claims German site Macerkopf.de. iOS 5.0.2 will allegedly be out by the end of next week, and attempt to fix battery life problems that went unresolved by v5.0.1. Battery drain has been a recurring issue with iOS updates, although most devices are typically unaffected. The other planned update is iOS 5.1. The firmware will reportedly make several upgrades to Siri, expanding its functions. Users should, for instance, be able to take a photo or record video using voice commands, as well as toggle Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on or off. When v5.1 might go live however is unknown. Apple officially considers Siri to be in a beta state. Some functions are in fact unavailable outside of the US, and only a relative handful of languages are supported. The only device with Siri installed is the iPhone 4S, despite the technology clearly working on hacked older products. from the German blog site: "Das nächste große Update (vermutlich iOS 5.1) wird zahlreiche Neuerungen rund um die Siri Sprachsteuerung bringen. In 2011 soll es mit iOS 5.1 nichts mehr werden. Die Arbeiten am Siri Kern seien sehr aufwendig." if I read it correctly they're saying that next major update iOS 5.1, will bring changes and improvements to Siri voice controls and then carry on saying (highlighted in bold) that work on Siri is expensive (costly). I wonder why that is more so than other iOS feature. One possible explanation is that they have to pay Seinfeld to write joke answer for her.

It does not say "expensive" it says that work on Siri is very "extensive" or rather "resource intensive". It has little to do with financial cost, but it confirms my earlier point.

Another nice thing, IMO, about Apple's product matrix for the iPhone - there's not much guesswork. At the core, you pick an iPhone, pick the color, and the capacity - doesn't matter which carrier you are on, or where in the world you are. Compare that to Samsung, with over 160 variations of the basic Galaxy S model, along with different carrier models, different country models, different OS models (WinMo, Bada, Android). Aside from the fandroids rationalizing this as "choice", it's no wonder Samsung has razor thin margins, with all of their unnecessary product differentiation going on. RIM and Nokiasoft are no better, with over 300 phone models between them. What's Apple got? iPhone 3GS (now going on 3 years old, and outselling all the above) iPhone 4 - nearly unchanged from release, albeit I suspect the current iPhone 4 models have an updated antenna and are single devices with multi-band support for CDMA and gsm (again, reducing production differentiation further, for Apple) iPhone 4s ... and we have yet to see what Apple plans to do for the prepay market (they hinted at it earlier this year), albeit many of the pieces are already falling into place, just awaiting a new model iPhone.

"aufwendig" translates in English as costly but even so, taking your translation at face value, "resource intensive" in manufacturing's jargon means allocation of assets and human resources to a project and that costs money and time, which in turn costs more money. So yes, they are saying (the German blog) that Siri is time consuming and expensive

Sarge, I'm not going to argue with you pointlessly, but if you feel like lecturing a native German speaker about the intrinsic meaning of a German word, then, by all means, be my guest. I simply feel that I probably have a far better grasp of the intrinsic meaning of a word in my native language, than a dictionary. "Aufwending" comes closest to "extensive", "complex" and "very complicated" in the manner it was used - yes, this implies resources, which to a certain degree involves money, but that was not the implication of that sentence in the manner that word was used.

I'm not going to lecture anybody on German language, let alone a mother tongue speaker. I have lived in Germany yonks ago, for two years. I can't say I speak the lingo now, but I can still throw a few insults, or sweet talk a girl. Going back to the topic on hand, even if we take for granted your translation "resource intensive" it means that Siri is an expensive undertaking as dedicating assets and people to a project cost money and time. It's wrong for you to say: "It has little to do with financial cost". Bit pedantic I know but it's a point worth making.

apparently one can soon buy a scented iPhone case; Jelly Belly Beans will launch a range of scented covers, flavours include: Bubblegum, Very Cherry, Blueberry, Top Banana, French Vanilla, Liquorice, Grape, Green Apple and for the discerning users, Wild Blackberry. They are in the same vibrant colours as the popular beans, and also come with a 10g pack of Jelly Belly beans. The camera lens hole is also the shape of a jelly bean. What to say?
