Hp should have stuck with webOS. Going with Windows 8 and throwing her fate in with Microsoft will be her undoing as well. Anyone up for a new CEO next year?

Report from Bangkok Post dated 8 March 2012 :- Apple unveils new iPad ================= Apple unveiled a third-generation iPad enhanced with features aimed at keeping it on top of the booming tablet computer market. The new iPad boasts a more powerful processor, eye-grabbing resolution on par with that of an iPhone 4S, and the ability to connect to the latest 4G LTE telecom networks that move data faster than their predecessors. "We think that iPad is the poster child of the post-PC world," Apple chief executive Tim Cook said, noting that iPad sales topped those of any personal computer maker during the final three months of last year. "We have redefined once again the category Apple created just two years ago with the original iPad," Cook said at a press event in San Francisco, the first major product release by Apple since the death of founder Steve Jobs. The new iPad will go on sale March 16 in Canada, France, Germany and the United States at the same price as the previous models, which start at $499 for the most basic iPad featuring wireless connectivity only. An iPad with 16 gigabytes of memory and with both Wi-Fi and 4G connectivity will cost $629 in the United States while a 32GB Wi-Fi/4G model will cost $729 and a 64GB version with Wi-Fi and 4G will cost $829. In a bid to cater to budget-minded shoppers, Apple will sell a 16GB version of the iPad 2 at a trimmed price of $399. The new iPad screen was billed as the best display ever on a mobile device. The tablet also features a five-megapixel camera and high-definition video recording. Apple said the latest model has the same 10-hour battery life as its predecessor, with the span cut by about an hour with constant use of high-performing 4G telecom networks. The third-generation iPad weighs 1.4 pounds and is 9.4 mm thick, slightly heavier and slightly thicker than the previous model. Apple showed off an enhanced suite of iPad applications for tasks ranging from movie editing to making music or managing one's life. A new iPhoto application turns the iPad into a slick tool for editing pictures with simple touches or automated features. Epic Games president Mike Capps joined Cook to show off a version of the Infinity Blade videogame for the iPad, contending the quality was comparable to videogame console play. "It is an evolutionary upgrade with a lot of revolutionary features," said Gartner analyst Michael Gartenberg. "It is going to put a lot more pressure than before on iPad competitors. "The updates to GarageBand, iMovie, and the new iPhoto will drive this going forward," Gartenberg said. "At the end of the day it isn't going to be Tim Cook that sells the iPad, it is going to be the iPad that sells the iPad; and they are going to sell a lot of them," he said. Apple's App Store has more than 200,000 mini-programs, or "apps," tailored for the iPad with offerings including books, games, and software designed for getting work done. Apple has dominated the tablet market since launching the iPad two years ago and few expect that to change anytime soon. IMS Research predicted that Apple would increase its tablet market share to 70 percent in 2012 from 62 percent in 2011 and it will ship 70 million iPads this year, up 71 percent over the previous year. "Apple's insistence on blending hardware innovation with services innovation will keep the iPad at the front of the tablet pack for the foreseeable future," said Forrester analyst Sarah Rotman Epps. Apple real-world stores will be "critical" since the high-resolution screen is the major improvement in the iPad, and it needs to be seen to be fully appreciated, according to Gartner analyst Van Baker. "It is astoundingly beautiful, but people are going to have to get it in their hands to see this," Baker said. A new dictation-taking feature could be a stumbling point for the iPad, since that type of technology has proven to be a bane to other companies, according to independent analyst Rob Enderle of Silicon Valley. The California-based gadget-maker on Wednesday also released an updated Apple TV box used to stream movies, television shows and other content from the Internet to high-definition TV sets. The new box features a streamlined new user interface and will sell for the same $99 price as the previous model. Apple TV was synched with iCloud, on online content storage service that lets people buy films or television shows on the box but have the options of watching them on iPhones, iPads, iPod touch devices, or on computers. Apple released the first version of Apple TV in 2007 but it has never really caught on with the public. The iPad event was the second Apple product launch by Cook since he took over for Jobs, and both events showcased improved versions of products. "Let's wait and see if Apple can bring an astounding new class of product to market," Baker said. "Ultimately, they need to do that." Investors appeared unsurprised by Apple's announcements, with the company's stock price inching up slightly to $531.05 a share in trading on the NASDAQ. Report from AFP dated 13 March 2012 :- Apple looks to tighten tablet market grip with new iPad ========================================== SAN FRANCISCO: Apple will be looking to tighten its grip on the tablet market on Friday with the release of its newest iPad, increasing pressure on Google to make rival Android devices more enticing. Hordes of gadget lovers are expected to lay siege to Apple stores to get their hands on third-generation iPads when they debut at 8:00 am local time in the United States and nine other countries including Australia, France and Singapore. A week later the new iPads will be available in nearly 30 more countries. It has become standard to see long queues at Apple shops on release dates, and a flood of orders for iPads at the California firm's online store indicates the ritual will continue on Friday. "If pre-orders are any indication, we are going to end up with a heck of a lot of people lined up at the stores," said Gartner analyst Van Baker. "A lot of people are going to be curious in addition to those that want to buy one," Baker said. "There will be big crowds for a while." A key upgrade to the new iPad is eye-grabbing screen resolution on par with that of an iPhone 4S, and it needs to be seen to be appreciated, according to Baker. The new iPad also boasts a more powerful processor and the ability to connect to the latest 4G LTE telecom networks that move data faster than their predecessors. A high-energy launch is vital to Apple, since the tablets are the company's second-best selling device after iPhones in a wildly successful but extremely narrow product line, Baker said. Apple's online shop quickly sold out of iPads available for delivery on Friday and began telling buyers they will have to wait several weeks. Analysts at Canaccord Genuity predicted Apple will sell 65.6 million iPads this year, raising their forecast by nearly 10 million tablets after the unveiling of the latest model. "We believe Apple has extended its leadership position in the fast-growing tablet market," Canaccord Genuity said in a note to investors. "We believe the new iPad has raised the bar relative to competing tablets." Makers of tablets powered by Google-backed Android software have produced impressive hardware, but lack the "ecosystem" of applications, movies, and music available for iPads. About 200,000 fun, hip, or functional "apps" have been tailored for iPads while the number of mini-programs customized for Android tablets is estimated at anywhere from 200 to 2,000. Part of the challenge is that free Android software has been customized by gadget makers to suit the array of tablets, meaning app developers need to do the same with programs. In contrast, an app can be designed to work on all iPads. "Google is going to have to do something to foster additional development of applications on Android tablets," Baker said. "Something is going to have to give on that front to increase the appeal of Android tablets other than the Kindle Fire." Kindle Fire tablets from Amazon have racked up sales by costing hundreds of dollars less than the cheapest iPad and by being synched with the rich trove of movies, music, digital books and more sold by the online retail colossus. Industry tracker IDC said that Android tablets are slowly closing the gap with iPads thanks to the Kindle Fire and could take the lead in terms of global market share by the year 2015. "The sheer number of vendors shipping low-priced, Android-based tablets means that Google's OS (operating system) will overtake Apple's in terms of worldwide market share," IDC mobile connected devices research director Tom Mainelli said. Apple is offering a 16-gigabyte iPad 2 model for a trimmed price of $399 in a move which "should expand the market for the product as well," according to NPD analyst Ross Rubin. New-generation iPads are being sold at the same prices as previous models, which start at $499 for a basic model featuring wireless connectivity only.

Report from The Korea Herald/Asia News Network dated 15 March 2012 :- Korean low-priced tablets hope to take on the big boys Low-priced tablets are receiving more attention in Korea with the success of Amazon Kindle in overseas markets. ================================================================ SOUTH KOREA - The local tablet PC market is being challenged by online shopping malls selling low-priced tablet PCs to consumers here by joining hands with smaller manufacturers. Samsung Electronics, the country's biggest IT firm, has unveiled plans to release low-tier tablets in the first half of the year, while its rival LG Electronics has no plans to roll out another tablet PC in the first quarter. "We're aiming to diversify our tablet portfolio and produce low-tier tablet PCs sometime in the first half of this year as we did earlier with low-tier smartphones," said Samsung's mobile chief Shin Jong-kyun during his meeting with the Korean press in Barcelona, Spain, last week. Samsung has already unveiled four different sizes of its flagship tablet PC, Galaxy Tab, in different markets, while LG only introduced one model - the Optimus Pad LTE - in January this year Earlier on Tuesday, an SK-affiliated online shopping mall called 11st Street said it sold all 500 of its 5-inch tablet PCs, priced at 129,000 won (US$114), in just 11 minutes. "We expected it to be a major sell-out but it was over and done in such a fast period," said an official from 11st Street. The sale was a joint effort with mid-sized firm Hansung Computer, and more than 80 percent of the buyers were in their 20s and 30s - 51 percent in their 30s and 33 percent in their 20s - according to officials at the online shopping mall. "Only the early adapters were able to own the smart pads in the past considering the high cost, but now the rising demand is being served by affordable prices," the official said. The online shopping mall plans to put a 7-inch tablet PC on sale next Tuesday as well as a 9.7-inch tablet the week after, according to the official. 11st Street is not the only online shopping mall offering tablet PCs at cheap prices. Auction's 7-inch AllKill tablet PCs shifted 1,000 units priced at 269,000 won (US$238) each to sell out in the first 10 minutes of sale on Monday. G-market's 9.7-inch and 8-inch tablet PCs were also hot selling items at the online site in late February. "The tablets that are being sold online are eye-catching products for many, especially the younger people, since they are affordable and also run on Google's Android mobile operating systems - with some powered by Google's latest Ice Cream Sandwich platform," said an industry source. According to a recent report published by ROA Consulting, low-priced tablets are receiving more attention in Korea with the success of Amazon Kindle in overseas markets. The report also said the sales of low-tier tablet PCs will take off smoothly here, but the competitiveness of online shopping mall in terms of content production remains a question. A similar debate surrounding half-priced televisions took place earlier this year with large supermarket chains, such as E-mart and Lotte Mart, releasing TVs priced at 400,000-600,000 won (US$354-US$532) in the 30-inch range. Samsung, the world's top TV maker, said it would produce customized TVs if there was a market for it, but also said it had no plans to make any in the same price range as the supermarket chains.

I have the Samsung Galaxy 7.7 pad and its Super AMOLED screen renders color far nicer than the iPad 2, but probably not quite as brilliantly as the new iPad with its improved screen. My Sony Ericsson Ray has a wonderful screen, maybe with more saturation than the iPhone, but white is whiter on the Apple phone. I might have missed some possibilities but I find iTunes rather restricted here in Thailand when it comes to downloading books and films but it works nicely for music. Android has a wider choice in media supply, right? But Android (and Windows) are maddeningly complicated to use, totally lacking the intuitive elegance of the Apple system. If I lived in Europe or the US would absolutely stick to the iPhone and the iPad. And I will go back to the Apple kind of artifacts in a year or so, with the iPhone 5. But I'm not emotional about either system as some posters here seem to be. Totally pragmatic.

Make sure you use an iTunes account with a USA billing address and credit card, and you will ave no problem getting content in Thailand. Just switch it to the USA store, and you'll be fine

Thanks. Anyhow, I have one year or so to find a good Apple solution and one should never be in a hurry to buy new things. Will stick to my Samsung and Sony gadgets until then. As engineering artifacts they are quite beautifully conceived products, only problem is that Android and Windows systems seem to be invented by a committee of nerds and not by creative human spirits as is the case with the Apple system.

Apple has sold (not 'shipped') 3 million new iPads this weekend. Apple also announced that they sold 55 million iPads over the past 2 years. There are estimates that they might sell that many this year alone. Last I checked, competing tablets, combined, are hoping to break to 750,000 *sold* tablets (ie tablets in use). This might explain why you hardly see any Android tablet users. Yeah, I think Android has a *lot* of catching up to do.
