Oh boy, that Transformer Prime - Asus sure is winning! http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/20/asus-transformer-prime-gps-extension-kit-hands-on/ Sean Buckley, writing for Engadget on the GPS dongle for the Asus Transformer Prime:
We did encounter a snag using it however, our tablet would randomly reboot every few minutes while the dongle was attached, though a sticker on the kit’s front implores users to update their slate before use. Our tablet is up to date, of course, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see a compatibility fix in the coming weeks. Despite matching our Prime’s color profile, the dongle is a little on the ugly side, facing its screws towards the user, rather than hiding them on the tablet’s back. Hiccups and eyesores aside, the attachment works, plain and simple. It isn’t as elegant of a solution as we might as hoped, but at least it’s free. Yeah, at least it’s free. What’s not to like?

Jay Yarow: ‘Android Is Suddenly in a Lot of Trouble’ http://www.businessinsider.com/android-is-suddenly-in-a-lot-of-trouble-2012-4
Good piece by Jay Yarow at Business Insider laying out the case against Android. But I disagree with the headline. It’s not that Android is suddenly in a lot of trouble — it’s that a lot of people are suddenly realizing that Android has been in trouble all along. Nothing here is new. The fragmentation, the lack of traction on any devices other than cell phones, the tension between handset makers and Google — these problems have been around from the get-go. The only thing that’s actually news is Verizon’s signaling that it plans to make a push behind Windows Phone.

Report from APF dated 3 July 2012 :- Tablets to overtake notebook PCs by 2016: study ====================================== The survey by research firm NPD said tablets will be "the growth driver" for the mobile computer market over the next few years. Overall mobile PC shipments including tablets will grow from 347 million in 2012 to over 809 million by 2017. Notebook PC shipments are expected to increase from 208 million in 2012 to 393 million by 2017, but tablet shipments are expected to grow from 121 million to 416 million in the same period. A key driver for tablet growth is adoption in North America, Japan and Western Europe, which will account for 66 per cent of shipments in 2012 and remain in the 60 per cent range throughout the next few years, NPD said. "Consumer preference for mobile computing devices is shifting from notebook to tablet PCs, particularly in mature markets," said Richard Shim, analyst at NPD. "While the lines between tablet and notebook PCs are blurring, we expect mature markets to be the primary regions for tablet PC adoption. New entrants are tending to launch their initial products in mature markets. Services and infrastructure needed to create compelling new usage models are often better established in mature markets." In its most recent quarterly survey on mobile devices, NPD said in May that Apple's iPad had 62.8 per cent of the tablet market, with Samsung a distant second at 7.5 per cent. Since then Google said it would sell its own branded tablet made by Asus, while Microsoft introduced a tablet that converts to a notebook, to be on sale later this year.

Report from APF dated 5 July 2012 :- Apple preparing to launch smaller tablet: report =================================== NEW YORK: Apple is preparing to launch a smaller tablet computer in the coming months in a bid to maintain its edge in an increasingly crowded market, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday. The Journal cited unnamed sources as saying that component parts manufacturers had been ordered to gear up for mass production of the tablets in September, indicating the launch may be drawing near. It said the new tablet's screen would likely be smaller than eight inches (20 centimeters), compared to the 9.7-inch (25-centimeter) screen on Apple's market-leading iPad, launched in 2010. The newspaper cited one source as saying that Apple was working with screen-makers LG Display of South Korea and Taiwan's AU Optronics. Apple has dominated the market for tablet computers since the release of the iPad but faces increasing competition as Samsung, Amazon, Microsoft and Google roll out competing devices.

No, they are not. You don't really vet your sources, do you? You just post whatever comes across your screen.

Vet the primary source. This is all based on ONE initial Digitimes report (already an incredibly unreliable source, which predicted the "iPhone nano" 3 years ago), listing 'unnamed sources" and "people in the know" and having NOT A SINGLE EVEN REMOTELY viable source. Subsequently, as is so normal in our times today, the same story was picked up by Reuters, AFP, AP, WSJ, and several other news sources - most quoting each other. Sure, at some point a smaller tablet might make an appearance - it's doubtful that it will happen in October (announcements happen in September, and if Apple had something to launch in that time, it would *already* be in production - and even picking apart beta software has yielded nothing except for two new items (iPhone and a new iPod Touch).
