Gator, in case you haven't noticed, I am not at work.

Doing research? Of course it is good. There was never any disagreement on this.

Now, really do not look so much at import taxes only. The local income taxes for corporates may even be more important. If you are in a country with higher local costs and higher corporate taxes, you will have to increase prices to make it worthwile for you as the amount left after paying the government would be small. Then look also at other taxes like VAT.

I do not know the price of a laptop in Norway. The import tax in Norway for a laptop could be zero. But with a corporate tax rate of 50% and a VAT of 23%, my bet is that a Taiwanese laptop is more expensive in Norway than in Thailand only due to these two taxes already.

Look also a local costs for the local staff -who also have to have a higher salary for themselves to justify their standard of living in a place like Norway (and their own personal income tax, on which they certainly cannot cheat). Look at the rental cost of the store, energy costs, transportation costs from Taiwan to Norway, etc. and this cute laptop I bet again is much more expensive there than in LOS.

Anyway, I am glad that we are starting to agree.

Cheers

EDIT: From Abrak's link: ".....Thailand has eliminated tariffs on 153 categories of products (including computers, calculators, transistors, and machinery and equipment in the manufacturing of semiconductors) in the year 2000. Currently, Thailand is in the progress of removing tariffs on the Slow Track on 37 additional products to zero by 2005 including fax machines, pocketbook computers, answering machines, and fibre optic cable.

As a lazy casual observer can someone explain to me why Nikkor lenses (made in Thailand) are cheaper to buy in the EU, US and Japan?

5555!

This is why my sentences were full of qualifiers like "if." With a few "may be's" thrown in for good measure.

My scenario though was strictly the high level overview. Two imported laptops of the same declared value passing through two different country's customs. Of course there are other factors that raise the price of equipment but I was speaking only about point of entry cost.

Regardless of all that, I still think IBM makes the best laptop by far with Dell coming in second, everyone else I don't even want to think about. I don't have much personal experience with Acer laptops but I'm sure it's for good reason. Their website also didn't impress me with nearly 1/4 of the links I clicked on being down. When you need support outside of their business hours, just remember that your support and the ability to fix your problem quickly is most likely going to rely on that website.

Can't comment about the Nikkor lenses, you got me there.

The most likely explanation is that the Nikkor plant has BOI priveleges which provide a tax free status so long as product is manufactured for export. Nikkor lenses would then be re-imported and subject to import duty.

By the way, a couple of years ago there were 'off the back of the lorry' Nikkor lenses available at substantial discounts. Be warned though that these lenses will not have a valid guarantee for obvious reasons.

I was just in Panthip and I picked up a price list from Notebook.com - probably the biggest notebook seller in Thailand (they also trade under the names of Hardware House and G2 Tech). They have 4 shops in Panthip and outlets in the IT Mall Siam Square, Seri Centre etc..

Looking at the price list I dont see the 2025 (although the list mostly shows Acer's low end line). The Acer 2012 WLCi is listed at Bt53,900 inc. Vat (7%). Spec:Cent 1.5m, DDR256, 60GB, Combo, 15.4'WXGA, 3Y warr XP-H.

Suggest you call them up.

That makes sense.

Any idea if the lorry is still about and if a D70 might fall from it? I don't really care about a guarantee, just want a cheap Nikkor telephoto (105mm or 135mm) while I save up for a D70...
