Tyler Durdin and kmanrox:
I bought a world phone and then used a PacBell Sim Chip. It allowed me to make calls and received calls while in asia. The problem with buying and using a U.S Sim is that when people call you it's a local # because it will be your U.S #, but when you call out, you will be maknig a long distance call.

Now, I tried to take a phone from here back to Thailand and use their Sim chip in it without having it modified and it did not work.

Depends on how often you plan on going to BKK, but you can just go an buy a cheap cell phone over there and then use their Sim (1 to Call) cards in the phones. This will allow you to make and receive international calls. Okay. I only made and received calls from the U.S. Not sure if it will work receiving calls from other countries.

But, I am sure that if you do not mind modifications on your phone, the people at MBK can make it work. The problem might be when you try to re-use your phone back in the U.S. But, I do not have any experience in that area.

If you find a solution, please post it!!

I do not think that the Sim chip you buy in Thailand will work in a U.S phone without modifications. This is because the Sim Chip knows that phone was made in the North American Region and will not accept Sim's that are for the PacRim Region. This is what I've been told.

I think it's like DVD's. In the U.S we can only play the ones in Region 1 or All regions. I bought some in Thailand which were Region 3. My DVD player says wrong region.

But, there is no harm in taking your phone and trying it. Good luck!!

I do not believe that to be true.  I haven't put a Thai SIM in my T68i yet, but I have an Indonesian SIM and several others and they work perfectly.

I the issue is not the SIM -- it is your phone.  Most phones are "LOCKED" which means that because you buy it from your network provider at a subsidized rate, they "lock" the phone so you can only use their SIM in it.

I specifically bought an UNLOCKED triband phone and it works with ANY SIM card.

I believe that if you have an unlocked phone you can use anything you want in Thailand, whether it is AIS, Orange, DTAC or another...

for all you us guys. again it is not a problem  which phone zou are using, it is the system your phone is made for. as far as i know there is only voicestream in the us, which uses the more advanced european/asian "gsm standard". that means as long as you have a "gsm standard" phone it will work with any prepaid card in the world. not only in thailand, but also philippines, indonesia, japan, europe, africa etc.
so next time you sign up for a new mobile phone contract in the us make sure you are taking a service provider which does offer the digital gsm technology (like voicestream) and not the older outdated analog system.

Griffin, again this is not completely true!!  If the phone is locked you cannot change SIMS.  Believe me, I know about this well.

So, you need a dual or tri band phone, AND it has to be unlocked if you want to change the SIM.  If you want to ROAM, you just need the dual or triband phone and can use it in Thailand.  But to change the SIM it has to be unlocked.

I am 100% certain of this.

To make things simple:

Go to Mahboonkrong Center, 3 rd floor, and ask one of the many shops to unlock your phone.

Either Orange, DTAC and AIS sims will then work on your phone.

4z, sure of course this does not work when you use a subsidesed phone with a simlock. i was talking about all international gsm phones without any simlock.
if there is a simlock ericsson and siemens phones usually can be cracked in mbk 3 rd floor. with nokia and others i had problems.
just make sure you use a full paid unlocked gsm phone!

OK ja, just talked to Nokia, the phone I have Nokia 8390, GSM with AT&T service will not work in BKK because it runs in a 1900 frequency, while BKK runs a 1800 frequency.  They said in order for me to do the SIM Card switch, the Ericson T68 or T68I will work and the Siemens S46 will work.  The Siemens phone will also switch from TDMA to GSM.

Now, that was the "official" answer, I am not sure what magic the boys at MBK can do on my phone but it may not be worth it if I cant use my phone when I get back to the US.  It may be just worth my time to buy one of the above phones for the sole purpose of using in BKK since I will be traveling there frequently and buying the 1-to-Call cards.

Another question....How much would it cost to buy a mobile in BKK (just a run of the mill average one, nothing fancy)?    Where I live, the mobiles are ridiculously cheap (they practically give them away) from $0.00 to $75 (after rebates) but the catch is that they suck you into a 1 yr plan (X amount of minutes a month) with a tough lease to break out of.  In BKK is this the same way or do you need to buy the mobile, buy the SIM card and also buy the service seperately?  How does it work.  I am thinking of buying a mobile here (US) that will work over there (BKK) but maybe it is cheaper to buy a mobile in BKK and keep buying the 1-to-Call cards whenever I am over there.  What do you think?

I spent $250 on a phone what would cost me $50 in the U.S. Phones are expensive compared to the U.S.
