Incidentally the problem was Windows XP which was fairly new at the time. I had found the 'hibernation' button but I hadnt realised that you could reactivate the computer and access Outlook Express without having to input the passwords.
Ahhhh well these things happen.
Just got a Thinkpad T43p with the Fingerprint protection. Hope this will help to make it more private
