Report from Bangkok Post dated Monday 13 March 2006 :-

Winners of ADSL boom
=============================================

The availability of interactivity delivered by broadband Internet is projected to flood the household market in Thailand next year, with two private fixed-line telephone operators gearing up to capitalise on the phenomenon.

True Corporation, the Bangkok operator that dominates the digital broadband market, says it believes greater competition in high-speed Internet will be seen in 2007, driven mainly by the planned service launch by the provincial fixed-line operator TT&T.

TT&T plans to begin offering voice-over-Internet Protocol fixed-line and broadband Internet services in Bangkok this year. It aims to offer at least 300,000 numbers in the first phase and draw 300,000 new broadband users.

Phaibul Sirivanich, director for consumer services of True, said that while the company earned only a few hundred million baht from broadband, the business had grown significantly since last year.

True is seeing rapidly growing demand for converged-technology connectivity among users of mobile phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and laptops.

The company recently launched a home automation services platform in a collaboration with the electrical equipment distributor Alllight Centre.

Customers who buy Alllight's products and sign up for True broadband can control their home electrical appliances via a mobile phone, PDA or laptop.

He said the company planned to introduce one more wireless digital home solutions in June, called Home Office services, which would cover areas such as document management, printing-on-demand, software security and hold-back file services.

True has already introduced WiFi at home, home monitoring, security and home automation services.

The company has almost 200 medium- to high-end housing projects with 80,000 units signed up for the installation of Cyber Home by True services.

"We expect to have 600,000 broadband Internet subscribers at the end of the year, out of a projected total of one million," Mr Phaibul said, adding that the company expected the number of its WiFi users to exceed 50,000 this year, compared with 20,000 currently.

The company expects to boost the number of households in Thailand signing up for Internet services to exceed the current 15.5%, out of a total 16.7 million households, this year.

Mr Phaibul said the number of broadband users in Thailand could surge to 2.7 million by 2007, once leading players tap into IPTV (Internet protocol television), or TV broadcasts over the Internet.

Hi guys:

I am an experienced computer user/administrator, currently running consumer networking products on my home networks in the States. I have configured multiple secure LAN and WiFi systems (MS & Linux) using hardware from multiple vendors in the USA.

I have TRUE as my Bangkok ISP (I know... it was not my choice) with an ADSL modem that connects to my Win32 computer via a USB connection. To access the network this computer must run a windows client application that accesses the modem via the USB cable and negotiates the connection using a provided username and password pair. This client application then remains open and running in the background throughout the length of the internet activity. Of course this USB connection dependency precludes easy Ethernet connection sharing by any sort of standard WiFi Router and also prevents any sort of simple setup for a non MS Windows (Linux) computers to share the connection (as it can not run this MS Windows client application to establish the connection).

I am interested in setting up a shared wireless network in my home in Bangkok. Ultimately to allow for the whole residence to be able to be covered by the shared WiFi signal, allowing multiple MSWin and Linux systems to share the current TRUE connection. At present if I want to share the internet connection I need to physically move the TRUE modem and connect it to the MS Win32 computer (no sharing). I am looking for something that can support VPN and WAP, and will allow for connection of an external amplified antenna if needed. I have experience in setting up and configuring cable routers, and wireless security back here in the States and feel I could likely do the same in my friend’s house, as long as TRUE’s system supports this functionality.

What I would like to do is purchase and install a device such as a D-Link DSL-G604T and/or DSL-504T that would replace the TRUE ADSL modem and allow for connection sharing.

Would you please advise if a D-Link DSL-G604T and/or DSL-504T interface with the TRUE ADSL system operating in Bangkok, allowing me to setup a WiFi in BKK? What is the process of swapping out the TRUE modem for the D-Link and what hoops do I need to jump through to get TRUE to permit this replacement? If allowed, I plan to purchase these devices here in the USA and install them in the next month. What, if any configurations are needed to operate with Thailand's TRUE system?

From the back-and-forth here in this forum I can see there are folks here with experience of setting up WiFi in Thailand. Could you advise me if TRUE’s system will allow for a third party router to sit down stream (Ethernet connected) allowing wireless networking with more than one PC, even a non-MSWin computer?

If there are other, better, DSL modem options I would appreciate hearing of these as well. Any experience with particular models and any advise on configuration hassles or workarounds would be very welcomed.

Thanks for your help.

True will not allow it but they will not check it. True now have wireless modes that you can buy. You do not need the computer on all the time just connect to LAN not USB much better.

Is there any monitoring of what you download i.e. movies mp3 etc?
Different countries are trying to crackdown on peering and I was just wondering is there any clamp down in Thailand or is it a free for all.

I have just installed a DSL connection with true. I sign up a 1 year contract and it came with an ADSL modem. I hook up a Linksys WRT54Gw Wireless G router with 4 ethernet port via the ethernet wan connection to the modem port. I now have wired and wireless capabilities. In addition I also added a Linksys BESFR41 Etherfast cabel/Dsl router to the WRT54G which give me an additonal 3 ethernet port to another part of the room to reduce lenthy cable wires.

I battled to get wireless installed in my condo for over a year, buying routers and access points and banging my head against the wall.

Finally, I just did it True's way, bought their off the shelf wireless boxed set, hired one of their guys to come in and install it, and it has been pretty much flawless ever since. I have had wireless now for over a year. Well worth it. I pay less than a thousand baht a month, and my computers are on the internet 24/7.

I say pretty much flawless, as one wireless router failed. I knew that it failed, but True felt compelled to send a guy to my home to confirm it. Yup. They then told me where to go to get it replaced or repaired, and frankly, I was expecting a nightmare.

I was pleasantly surprised when I walked in, a technician tested the unit, then swapped it on the spot with no drama. I had him configure the replacement unit, I tested it with my own laptop which I had brought with me, and ensured that it was good to go.

Came back home, plugged it in, and it has been running ever since.

Periodically, internet service will entire fail in my neighborhood (Huay Kwang, Dingdaeng), and I will have to just wait it out (two, maybe four hours, max), and it will require me to cycle power on the wireless router. The service has gone out here...perhaps two or three times in the past year.

In each case, when I called True, even in the middle of the night, I was able to speak to a technically competent person in English who confirmed that the problem was on their end, not on mine.

To say that True has made huge strides would be no understatement.

I am very, very satisfied.

The quality of their service is not quite to US standards, but it is very close. For Thailand...it is great.

Bottom line: do it their way, pay them to send a guy to set it up on site (maybe 4-5000 baht), and save yourself a lot of time, grief, and money.

I am using TRUE ADSL via a USB connected modem they provided as setup.

I want to get a modem that will allow connecting to the computer via Ethernet rather than the USB (so I can slip in a wireless router to share the connection).

Any suggestions/experience on if TRUE will exchange the USB modem for an Ethernet model.

Thanks!

yes. True provided me an ethernet modem. I use my own wireless router downstream from the modem.

You can get a USB - Ethernet router without replacing the USB modem
