I need to replace my shitty Time laptop. Should I buy a new one in London or wait until I arrive in Bangkok (I'm going to be there for at least a year, teaching) ?

If you don't mind getting a thai spec machine then there are some savings to be made buying in BKK as opposed to London, for example the Asus W5 goes for around 65,000 baht instead of the £1200 they're priced in the UK.

A PDA or pocket computer might be a useful alternative if you have a PC at home that you can synchronize with when needed.

I'm very interested in gettin' one of them Zaurus SL6000L thingys but Amazon have them on sale one day then next day, they're all gone!

Anybody know where to get one for less than the US$700 normal askin' price?

I got a Dell M-700 around Nov '04, Nice small packed without the need for external attachments. It’s great for me since I mostly use it when traveling, 2gig M proc, 1 Gig ram, 80 Gig HD, built-in everything.

UK prices and Thai prices aren't that different for laptops. London prices can be higher though. Best bargain in the UK....the end of line products like when Sony are about to bring out a new top-of-the-line laptop, the previous top-of-the-line one gets sold off at bargain prices. Better than BKK on that.
BKK is great for copy software and computer upgrades and accessories.

Want a laptop...I suppose it depends on whatcha want. There are many good brands the guys here have mentioned.
Gotta fit it to your reqirements.

Scared stiff of getting a virus. Use a Mac but sometimes you can't get the software you want for a mac.

You do movies and games? Gonna want a big screen but it'll be heavier.

Want a small, lightweight 'puter, no problem but the screen's gonna be small.

Got too much money? Spend it to get the best. Sony Vaios are really good but you could be spending the change on a whole loada pussy.

Get your priorities on paper and go get one....

Thanks Mr. D. I'm happy with my wee 'phone so I don't need that facility but I can appreciate why many folk do like it all combined/converged.

I really 'want' a pocket computer (I have a Psion 5MX) with built-in keyboard, WiFi, VGA screen and loadsa memory with SD and CF slots but no need for a camera or 'phone.

Cheerio
PS: The idea that the Zaurus runs Linux is also appealing to me.

Edit in: The're back on Amazon at US$399 a copy as of 24th August.

I would suggest that you list what you want to do with it / what software you would want to run. After you have composed a specification based on this then I would decide on two main factors: weight and price.

I use a laptop when travelling for the following:

Surfing in internet cafes
Writing
Editing digital photos
Storing data of course (maps, travel info, ebooks)
Watching porno dvds
Listening to cds (I use external speakers)

I find weight crucial because I carry my machine about almost every day. 1.5kg is acceptable. More than 2 kilos would not be. I didn't see many references above to actual weights... other than the Vaio mentioned (looks good).

I need very cheap because I want it to be less attractive to a thief (old and scratched casing is a benefit) and not to have too many worries if it falls in a river (I backup to a flash drive).

For me, an old Fujitsu S series does the job. 400usd is about right for the price. It would cope with your list of tasks too.

Also, battery life may be important to you. Personally I like the time limit of 3 hours that I have for sitting at it in cybercafes and bars... other things to do.

I've been a very happy chap ever since I 'switched' to Apple. According to this recent survey so is every other Mac user.
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1851295,00.asp

Almost 4 years later, my Powerbook 17" is still going gang busters and seems poised to process for quite sometime to come. Only [minor] complaint I had was the heft of it as I kept it always by my side. Bought me a 15" Powerbook last month and am finding it the optimum of weight vs. usability.

Anyone interested in a used 17" PB could send me a PM. I've yet to put it on the market.

Sir Rimalot
Top of the line bought it a year ago..
HP Pavilion zx5000
Intel (R) Pentium 4 3.00ghz
512 MB Ram
80 Gig Hard Drive
15.1" Widescreen
DVDR/RW CD Drive
3 USB
1 Firewire
Multi Card Reader
Harman Kardon Speakers
Video Out

It's heavy but I've got a Samsonite Computer Backpack to carry everything. Perfect to carry computer extra hard drive, cd drive, propper keyboard & mouse and still enough room for 3 days supply of clothes.

Although I'm looking to change to a newer model.. as I spilt beer on the keyboard while working by the pool in BKK anyone have comments on anything available in Thailand that would come up to the same power.
