Sure for the ‘Point n Shoot’ crowd with their; '7 mp' dial frozen in the; ‘AUTO MODE’ it is probably the greatest thing ever.
Which is exactly the target audience of iPhoto -- I didn't know, at the time, that you were a professional photographer, as I have had the same conversations with 'point and shoot' 'photographers', in which case those arguments are inane.

In your case, and any pro photographer, I wouldn't even mention iPhoto, except in passing that it has good Aperture integration - but even then I would rather point a photographer to Lightroom, because:

a) Adobe has done an admirable job with it.
b) Tight integration of workflow and interface with Photoshop.
c) Better performance than Aperture.

Essentially, Adobe has done a good job, and responded to the competition from Apple's Aperture (though, don't get me wrong, I doubt Lightroom would have turned out as well, if Adobe didn't have to compete - but that's a personal Adobe observation.)

Daffy I really respect you and your knowledge of Mac’s, I wish I had your knowledge, so thank you for all of your postings which I have found to be very helpful.

I would be the first to vote a BIG YES for Daffy’s own thread on Mac’s!
Me takes a bow - Thanks!

Daffy, thanks for that last post.

I was at the point of thinking you was being a total mac asshole.

My point of view: I use the tools that do the job well.

Apple did a brilliant job porting their OS to Unix and then switch to Intel. Brilliant, just brilliant. I always admired Jobs and his team (read folklore.org and you will know).

Yes: The Mac OS with the included software looks hot, and probably work well (I do not know, I was almost tempted to go the way, but I have not used the mac since it was early iBook and before that).

But do not be fooled. There is a lot of other alternatives that also could get the job done. I write this on a Vista Home Premium laptop (not my normal preference), but after some initial blows about faulty drivers etc. - I think Microsoft is coming through.

Normally I would point to Linux - I use Ubuntu as a main boot on my desktop computer, but the driver issues with external devices mean you would have to be a wizard getting a laptop on the road fully specced, so that is not recommended at the moment.

I used to be a pro photographer in my earlier life.

My current favourite pro photo software is Bibble Pro (search and you will find it). It is cheap and very powerful, it even has a plugin for Photoshop.

With install for Win, Linux AND Mac. With one licence you can run it on two versions at one time (win, lin, mac).

Maybe you should give it another chance, hmmm...?

I have a USB wireless internet card on my laptop that has Global Roaming through AIS in Thailand. I see that AIS, D-TAC and TRUE possibly offer these services, does anyone use this system in Thailand and Udon Thani and which company have you found to be the fastest and most reliable, and where do you get the internet SIM cards from, as I'm visiting in January and wondering whether to bother bringing the laptop.

Thanks BB

Bros, my TGF has just bought a new Toshiba Satellite - with a little assistance from me. She really wants to be computer literate and she put some of her savings into the purchase. Unfortunately she is not at all computer literate right now.

Can anyone recommend a reliable consultant in Bangkok who can get her system up and running, make sure the firewall is on, anti-virus is properly installed, generally tell her what she needs to know in Thai, and help her with any Window's glitches from time to time?

In terms of connecting to the internet, her apartment offers a broadband connection for 600B per month - in reading the forum threads, this sounds like a shared service liable to be slow and go down often. The alternative is an EDGE connection with a USB modem (I think the speed will be OK with her). Any recent recommendations /experience as to which is more reliable - AIS or D-TAC? She will be using it mostly in Bangkok.

Thanks

rcpsj

I'd go with shared broadband anytime - EDGE - DTAC & even more so most likely for AIS is shared too you know? Only so many 'time slots' available for date transmission since all the TGs clot up the lines by yakking non stop!
Anyway if you really think EDGE is better option go for DTAC or even TRUE. Actually the very fastest is HUTCH, but why don't she just get her own ADSL line if she need that much speed?

Thanks for the input Chilli. The fixed cost of an ADSL line or even a shared line was too much for her. She also likes the idea of being connected when she goes back to her hometown. She has both DTAC and AIS SIM cards for pre-paid EDGE service. She says that DTAC is much faster, even in her hometown. I guess, she has the patience to wait for webpages to load at EDGE speeds!

She would be paying nearly the same for the ADSL monthly (about 600 Baht per month) than she would for the CAT/HUTCH usb broadband at 700 Baht per month (get CDMA2000 in that case, not the regular slower CDMA).

The difference is that her up-front cost with broadband with be 12,000 Baht (though some of these offer a couple of months of free service), or 5000 Baht for just EDGE modems (though can be found cheaper). Plus, you still need to pay for EDGE monthly plans.

DTAC has a deal of one year EDGE access, unlimited, along with an appropriate card (express, PCMCIA, or USB) for 12,000 Baht.

Most ADSL plans include installation and equipment at no charge.

I'm about to head out to MBK to pick up a CAT or HUTCH usb modem (the CMOTECH versions work on the Mac), since my hotel's net connection has proven terribly unreliable on this trip - the current prices I found on these is around 11,000 to 12,000 baht for initial start up, and then about 800 a month (which I plan to pay a year in advance, and I think they give you 1-2 months free if you pay advance). I may not use the entire year, but the times I am here, I make up for lost time.

Still, those are the options at this point.

It might be worth revisiting that quote, considering what a disaster Vista SP1 turned out to be.
