Dammit! No Google Maps Coming to Apple's iOS 6 Soon, Eric Schmidt Says Anyone hoping that the Big G was going to swoop in and return functionality to Apple’s much-mocked maps on iOS 6 is just going to have to keep on waiting. Reuters is reporting that Google hasn’t made any maps application for iOS 6, and any decision to put it back onto the iPhone will have to be made by Apple. Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt says that the two companies are communicating, but does seem to be enjoying the negative attention his chief rival is getting. “We think it would have been better if they had kept ours. But what do I know?” Schmidt said, according to Reuters. “What were we going to do, force them not to change their mind? It’s their call.” “I’m not doing any predictions. We want them to be our partner. We welcome that. I’m not going to speculate at all what they’re going to do. They can answer that question as they see fit.” Schmidt’s olive-branch stance contrasts with what’s popularly perceived as an intense rivalry on Apple’s side. Ditching both Youtube and Google Maps for iOS 6 has been largely seen as part of the “thermonuclear” war that Steve Jobs once promised on Google. There’s been speculation on this site and elsewhere that if the founder was still around, he would have carried out this particular offensive a little more gracefully. Some have compared the maps situation to “antennagate,” when the iPhone 4’s antenna would cut out when users held it the wrong way, but this seems different to me. Not only is there no simple fix for the maps situation, there was no Google in antennagate. Apple has pointed out better than anyone else ever could had that there is something it can’t do as well as its rival. And that stings.

Another map problem. Previously, you could send a map URL like this, http://maps.google.com/maps?q=37.3168021,-122.0463 via SMS or email, and when you tapped on it, the Google Map App is launched (works for all previous versions of the iOS before 6). Now, in iOS 6, you get a web browser with Google Maps instead. The Apple apps doesn't get launched. Bummer!

In my opinion, unwarranted: http://www.apple.com/letter-from-tim-cook-on-maps/ ... but, good damage control. I have used Maps since the early dev program, and have found few to nearly zero issues issues with it. I'll start to put it to the test in Thailand, and will report on that result.

You can get greymarket iPhone 5 at MBK, starting at 33,500 Baht (16GB) and heading up to 40,000 Baht for 32GB (fluctuating prices depending on who you talk to). I'm picking up 3 iPhone 4S' (32GB) for 18,500 each today, trading in my iPhone 4's for 10,000 Baht each.
