Apparently 2% to 3% of shipped and in-use iPhone 3Gs are affected by this problem, which is a very reasonable rate, if true - and which nevertheless will be addressed by Apple.

Considering Apple's notorious secrecy about their products (and, rightly so), a global beta test, in number sufficiently large to root out 2-3% failure would have been near impossible, particularly if these failures only surfaced after several shipping batches (i.e. my originally purchased iPhone 3G does not appear affected, unless the problem manifests itself only after a while).

I would understand if the product dropping calls in one or two remote places, these situations are usually the result of local compatibility issues hence requiring a patch.
You appear confused as to what a 'patch' can or can not do. You also appear to not read prior explanations.

But globally? This is a failure of core functionality and in any applications I have helped design/develop it would have not got out the door.
If the problem is an obscure hardware issue that would not have surfaced during core testing, you would be in the exact same boat.

It's always extremely easy to be the armchair critic.

The point you are making, about the product having been rushed to market, is true only in the sense that software ALWAYS needs more time - the problem then is a double edged sword.

You delay shipping, and as a result you get lambasted with criticism how you miss shipping deadlines, and you'd be the first to scream how Apple can't deliver, etc...

Plus, delayed deliveries affect other realities - since Apple is working on global roll-outs now, dealing with manufacturing factors, etc... Either way, I happen to agree that as long as the hardware functions, the most important part is *TO* actually ship and deliver the product, as you will never get 100% functionality perfectly out the door.

The point is that Apple ships on time, and is very good about fixing any remaining issues within a reasonable amount of time. yes, initial iPhone 2.0 software had some serious flaws and problem -- which were fixed by 2.0.1.

iPhone 2.1, in September, will further fix remaining issues (as there are still quite a few left), and introduce new features and some that people have been waiting for, for a while - such as synchronized notes with the desktop, turn-by-turn navigation, push-notification, and maybe even copy/paste (though not a dealbreaker issue for me).

So far, their strategy works exceptionally well, to your chagrin, I'm sure.

Here's some facts:

Lastly, I guess we've reached the 'BooHoo' phase:

So far, this thread would serve as an excellent illustration of the above link - thank you gentlemen.

yes I love the last link daffy - did you actually read it all? and who the author is?

"The author has been an Apple user since 1984. During that time, he has owned an Apple IIe, an Apple IIgs, a Mac SE/30, a Mac Quadra 660AV, a PowerComputing PowerCenter 150, and a Power Mac G3/350 (Blue & White). He currently uses a Dual 2.0GHz PowerMac G5 and a 12" PowerBook G4. In spite of his loyalty to the platform, he finds most "Mac people" to be tiresome and annoying. He is pretty sure that if he had to attend WWDC or Macworld, he would wind up slapping the shit out of a bunch of people. When not attempting to cobble together funny things to put on the Internet, the author works at a diversifed energy marketing and trading company. The author resides in the fine city of Portsmouth, New Hampshire"

tiresome and annoying ??!??! hhhhmmmm

What phone are you buying / looking at buying, for those needs?

Seems like a good compromise, albeit I found the 2.0 software to have improved the photo quality quite a bit, albeit the lack of a flashlight can't be denied.

The phone I am waiting for is the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1

Sony's designed a great-looking phone that certainly a lot of people are waiting for... it being a Sony designed and engineered unit, I'm sure that we can expect the usual Sony standard of quality, functionality and usability.

Can't wait to some of the first reviews. When is it supposed to be shipping, according to Sony?

I seen dates of Mid-Sept, but I do not know if that is worldwide or not. I have not seen any indications of price either.

The new iPhone problem seems to be a problem from the Infinion chipset. Possibly can be fixed with software, but shame on Infinion for not properly testing the chipset out.

Agreed - it's one of those catch-22 situations. Apple likes to push the envelope and use new technologies, and that sometimes brings with it, those kind of issues -- how Infineon handles this situation, will determine what chipset may end up getting used in the next generation of iPhone, I think.

In the interim, this may be something similar to the situation with nVidia chipsets in the MacBook systems - where either a manufacturing defect, material failure, or firmware problem in the chip itself may be to blame.

Either way, based on the nature of the issue, I am quite certain that an Apple issued software update (*not* a patch) will eventually resolve the issue - the question is just when -- most likely on the 22nd, when 22 other countries get iPhone distribution, and Apple will need to release a software update and baseband update to address that anyway.

We'll know next week.
