Interesting tidbit about the iPod - the reason why the iPod is, out of the box, the loudest of the players on the market (i.e. volume fully up, is louder than other players at same setting) is because Steve Jobs is partially deaf -- and it sounds fine to him 
Regarding quality of sound, really, that's an individual taste issue, and how you have your sound configured (what headphones, what amp, etc..)
My iPod sounded like crap on my car stereo until I replaced the speakers in the car (they were 10 year old weathered speakers), and adjusted the EQ on the iPod for the car. Now it sounds a million times better.
It's really just a subjective factor.

Hi guys.
As the info' that I've trawlled through in this thread might be a tad outa date, has anybody got an update on what's new in the MP3 player market these days?
I'll be in LOS soon and I want to get myself a (relatively) small capacity player that can store a coupla hundred tunes only.

I've bought (perhaps) the smallest Mp3 player available...the Benq Joybee 102R.

It's basic... perhaps too basic for some. But with 256mb aboard (around 100 wma tunes) it has a good sound and it's price (in bkk) is only THB 1890.

Pick up an iPod Shuffle -- $99/$150 for 512mb/1gb capacity (120/240 tunes). Pretty much close to the smallest you can get, with all the iPod goodness.
In terms of price/value, you can't do any better, in terms of getting the best player in that range.
Now, undoubtedly, others will pipe in about other players with featuritis (fm radio, recording, etc...), but in the end, you can either end up with an iPod right away, or go through a couple of players, and end up with an iPod, after spending more (It's what happens to most guys).
