Tyler:  just make sure to buy an unlocked "Dual or Tri-band" GSM phone.  Then it will work almost everywhere.  The US GSM frequency is a different one than Asia, Europe, Africa and most of the world.  Some palces in South America have the same freq. as US but it is spotty...

4Z:  Damn US, messing everything up!  It is amazing on how behind we are compared to the rest of the world in terms of wireless technology.  Thanks for the tip though!

Also, is it possible to rent mobile phones in BKK?

I just bought a Motorola v60 "world phone" in the US.  I loaded the simm card and supposedly you can go to another country and buy a prepaid card and load it and use it.  Anybody have any recent experience with this phone in thailand?

GSM phones come as cheap as THB 3,900, including a number (read: Simcard).

Telephones can be hired at the airport from AIS, but I don't think it's very economical.

dtac has an offer of a siemens c45 with thb 2,000 credit on it with a prepaid simcard for only thb 4,500. so that means you actually get the phone for thb 2,500 (usd 50!!!)
other offers available from orange (not recommendable as little coverage yet) and also ais.
so why the hell do ypou guys bother of buying a new phone in the usa when you get them brand new at these prices in los. these are prepaid cards, with no further commitments!!! SO THINK ABOUT THIS BEFORE YOU SPEND USD 250 IN THE US!!!

I bought mine in the US cause that's where I work and live.  Just trying to find out if I can stick a prepaid card into it in Thailand and use it there.  When I checked out new phones there last march it seemed that they were quite high in cost.

casey you are right that was up until about april when orange joined the competition. since then prices came down a lot with some subsidies on phones and very, very even ruinous pricing. so next time you come to los think about buying a new gsm phone with the current subsidies over here!

Hey, I am a total Thailand-mobile phone-newbie.  I learned a lot this past trip by talking with the Brothers and the TGs.  In fact, my Thai friend gave me his old mobile to use, I just bought the prepaid 1-2-Call cards (500bht) and dialed in the code and I miraculously had credit on my phone.  OK, but the mobile he gave me was a dinosaur (It was this huge blue walkie-talkie like thing), I couldnt even sit down with it in my pocket, I would have to take it out and put it on the table (I almost lost this thing countless times at bars, restaurants, taxis, etc) - frankly, it was embarassing.

Anyway, I am still not sure how the SIM card thing works.  If I take the SIM card (from the dinosaur phone) and put it into another new mobile, will that mobile work with the number I had from the dinosaur?  So if friends call me at the number I had before, it will still work (even though I have a different phone).  As for the 1-2-Call card, how does that work?   I used my mobile (the dinosaur) to register the 1-2-Call and so if I get this correctly, everything (1-2-Call, the phone #, phone call history) should all be stored on the SIM card.  Chai-mai?

TD:

Q: "If I take the SIM card (from the dinosaur phone) and put it into another new mobile, will that mobile work with the number I had from the dinosaur?
A: Yes it will. As long as the phone you are using accepts the SIM card. Meaning, you can not use the 1-to-call SIM in the U.S.

Q: So if friends call me at the number I had before, it will still work (even though I have a different phone).  "
A: Yes. that is the beauty of SIM technology

Q: I used my mobile (the dinosaur) to register the 1-2-Call and so if I get this correctly, everything (1-2-Call, the phone #, phone call history) should all be stored on the SIM card.
A: Yes, you are correct. All your phone #'s and text messages are stored on the SIM card. So ... whichever phone you use, as long as it's the same SIM card, all your information will go with you.

Q:As for the 1-2-Call card, how does that work
A: I am not a telco engineer, so I can only guess at how it works!! ha ha ha!! My theory is that the phone communicates with the central office everytime the phone is turned on or used. This is how they keep track of the amount of "baht" is left on the calling card. When you run out, the central computer, turns off the out going function on companie side. Thus, you can receive calls, but can not make any more. When you buy a new 1-to-call card and type in the password or whatever, then the computer unlocks the function for you to use. So then you can make out going calls. I hope that makes sense. Now ...  I could be completely off base here!! ha ha ha!!

ABC:  Now it was your turn to come to the rescue!  Thanks brah!  Having a mobile in BKK was key!  Easy way to communicate with the bros and TGs, although sometimes not having one does have its' advantages!  Thanks again!
