Some things sound great in theory, but in reality don't work so well.

Take for example f***ing at the beach, sounds great, but no matter what precautions you seem to take sand always seems to get in the wrong places.

Just think about sand in your keyboard.

Hey you workaholics’ leave your laptop at home!

If I had to do it over again, I would buy a Apple based upon ease of use of the OS. I just invested 1 year ago in two SONY laptops running XP and I plan to keep with that arrangement for the next 5 years.

Plus if you buy an Apple you got a lifetime of free tech support from Daffy!

Fact is, you can get excellent deals on Apple equipment, if you know where to look -- the first stop is usually Apple's refurbished equipment store, then Amazon.com (where they offer you better prices in the form of additional rebates, plus free shipping, and no sales tax)...
Dell and HP also have refurbished stores, but I was referring to new computers that one can purchase locally.

With regard to Amazon, I just checked and the cheapest new MacBook is $1024.00 after mail-in rebate. It has 13.3" Laptop (2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, Combo Drive) White. Same as specs as the one at Best Buy. Of course, not all rebates actually get paid, for some reason that only the rebate gods know about.

True, you get free shipping with Amazon, but BestBuy does not charge for shipping when you buy it at their store. Maybe you can save on taxes, but you could probably order the Dell via the internet and not pay taxes either.

According to wikipedia on the subject of Daffy Duck, I quote: "Daffy was the first of the new breed of 'screwball' characters that emerged in the late 1930s..." Well, at least he got that right.

OK. To further muddy the waters. I want to know exactly, in non techie terms, what I need to buy so I can use my SONY laptop with either of my mobile phones to achieve wireless on the beach at Samet, Samui, etc.
I currently use DTAC and TRUE sim cards and TRUE wireless at my home.

I dont want to use on the beach in LA or OZ, only on beaches and the like in Thailand(dont tell me Starbucks)......on the beach! Thank you bros.

JumpinJack,

Your solution for mobile wireless Internet on a Thailand beach depends on your mobile (wireless) carrier, your phone, and your computer.

For me, I used DTAC, a Treo 650 phone, and a Compaq laptop PC running Windows.

My solution was to get GPRS/Edge Internet Access enabled by DTAC (free to enable) and run a program called PDANet on both the Treo 650 and the Compaq Laptop. Then enable Bluetooth on both the Treo and Compaq.

My phone esentally becomes a wireless modem for the computer, and everything works.

If you go this route (making your phone a wireless modem), you should research your phones to see how this can happen. It will depend on the make and model of your phone. Most laptops have bluetooth, or you can buy a cheap bluetooth dongle in Pantip.

Another possible alternative, mentioned before in this thread, is to buy a PCMIA card or a USB dongle that directly gives you access to the wireless carrier. You would have to call DTAC or TRUE to find out if they have such a creature. In this case, you would not be using your mobile phone at all to make the connection.

Finally, of course, you need a signal on that beautiful Thai beach. Always bring a TG along in case you don't have signal..... 5555555

Dell will charge sales tax when you order from California. They have to.

You might want to learn how the sales tax thing works - It's not just enough to order from 'online'. If the seller has a warehouse, or presence in your state, you pay sales tax.

Odd how you argue over minutiae, but never address the problems with the operating system on the Windows side - well, honestly, you don't really have a point of comparison, so you really couldn't, I guess.

I am aware of state sales tax works on internet orders. I was not aware of the Dell warehouse in CA. Anyway, one can order HP, Compaq, and maybe Dell from other retailers who do not do business in CA.

But that is not the point. My original post stated that a person "will be paying hundreds of dollars more for the 'privledge' of using a Mac." You may regard that as "minutiae," but not everyone does.

I still stand by that number, regardless of sales tax, rebate, or any other issue. In fact, the price difference is even more than I thought, since the cheapest Mac does not even come close in terms of features to the PC laptops I mentioned.

I never made an assertion regarding ease of use, although unless one is retarded, I don't think Windows is all that difficult (I know a lot of idiots who use it). And since Apple sued Microsoft for copyright infringement over the "look and feel" of Windows being too much like the Mac OS, one can hardly claim there is a significant difference in ease of use between them.

I know someone who uses this type of service from Hutch. He can just plug the antenna into a USB port and take it anywhere, supposedly it has full coverage in Thailand. I know it works from Koh Chang. I believe monthly rates are 600 baht for limited bandwidth, up to 1000 for unlimited.

My 2 satangs worth. I started with computers with the Sinclair. Was an apple fan from the II, Lisa, Mac, etc. Have always believed they have a better made product, far superior OS, etc.

I made the switch to Winwoes for professional reasons and continued for 20 years. Fortunately I have a new project that is Apple based and have been re-introduced to OS X and the new products. I have 3 Windows machines and 2 Apples. For me, there is no question that the superior platform is Apple.

The OS is far more stable and robust that Windows. It is faster and does not get bogged down when I have more than 1 application running. True there may be a price difference however over a multi-year period what are we talking about 10, maybe 20 cents a day??!!

And since I have long background in service and call centre operations, I can tell you with 100% certainty that Windows machines can and often do have lots of support needs that are less common in Apple.

I still use my windows when I have to but 85% of my time is now on the Mac and will stay that way.

On the video to the TV part....most computers have a external video so you can connect to a TV or larger monitor. BUT this connection is video only...not audio so you have to deal with the audio connection as well

I second Daffy's recommendation to go Apple/Mac. A lot less hassle.

All my mates who switched from Windows to Mac said their only regret was that they hadn't switched ages ago.

Even my Windows geek friends by now agree that unless you are very good with all things Windows, avoid it at all costs.

What you consider a 'privilege' I have already pointed out as having tangible benefits - something anyone having *used* both platforms will attest to (fyi - hitting a few keys in a store and snickering does not qualify as 'use')

Sure, you can, eventually, do everything on Windows that you can do on a Mac - but the issue is simply which platform lets you go from A to B easier and faster - seeing as how you have no experience on the Mac, and argue purely from a level of derision, you are in no position to evaluate that.

I'm gonna stop responding to you, now, since you're just illustrating your ignorance rather blatantly - including the desperation of your argument (or, is that, laziness of your argument), by resurrecting a strawman from 25 years ago when the operating system market had nothing in common with the situations nowadays (well, except that Windows sucked back then, as well). So long, then, run along.

Whoa! How do you know I have never used a Mac? I have been using Apple computers for a long time starting with the Lisa, and then the Mac. They are nice, but if someone is on a budget and wants to save at least several hundred dollars, I think a PC would work just fine for email and web browsing. After all, more than 90% of the population uses Windows and seems to survive.

Your assumption that I have never used a Mac is just one of the many erroneous statements you have made in this thread, which are becoming so numerous it is hard to keep track of them all.

Your logic escapes me. If Apple sued Microsoft for copyright infringement over the Windows GUI interface, they must have thought it had a resemblance to the Mac. They certainly spent many millions of dollars trying to convince a Judge of that. Windows has significantly improved over the years, and is now even more like the Mac interface than when the lawsuit was filed (which Apple lost).

In any case, I am not here to argue which OS is best. The OP inquired about buying a laptop, and you recommended a MacBook. I merely pointed out that a MacBook will cost several hundred dollars more than a PC (a MacBook actually costs about $400-$500 more for the equivalent hardware). Now, some people may think the extra price is worth it, but I think it probably depends on each person's financial situation. Some people drive BMW’s and some drive Hyundai’s. I don't think that anyone who drives a Hyundai thinks it is better than a BMW.

In any case, so long as one understands that one reason the MacBook costs so much is that they have no direct competition (only Apple sells a laptop with the Mac OS), and one has the extra bucks, then I have no problem if someone wants to buy a MacBook. I certainly have no skin in the game.

But I do believe in truth in advertising, and transparency, which are severely lacking in your posts.
