H,

Sounds like I should get more shares in Apple.

Might have to have a 'shoot-off' at the next round-table... select your weapon

Was in Panthip today and the prices for ipods were

10GB 14,900B
20GB 18,600B
40GB 23,500

There was the possibility of some discount but not much as they said they could sell as many as they wanted. Which could be true as neither of the 3 shops I went to had all sizes in stock.

They were talking about maybe next month for the mini Ipod ( but then they said that in Feb as well so who knows! )

I would love to buy one but I am still not sure to get one that size or the smaller thumb drives at 128/256 size as it is quite rare I would be listening for more than 2 hrs at a time anyway.

I have one of those iPOD minis, a silver one imported from the States. I really like it as it is small and even if it only carries 4 Gb it's enough for 3 whole days of listening 24/7 with mp3s coded at 160 Kbits.

Battery will last about 10 hours after 2 complete recharges.

During my stay in LOS I'll backup pictures from my digital camera to my POD which is quite easy to do either through USB or a Card reader from Belkin which you attach directly to the Poddy.

BTW AnaPod is a great little program that lets you upload and download songs to/from your player through windows explorers without having to use iTunes with it's built in limitations.

But as a MAC freak that I am I use iPodRip which is quite good.

My ipod appears to have bitten the dust and I am going to buy a mini-ipod to replace it (yes I know it is outrageously expensive but it looks so damn cool!!)

Anyone seen them in BKK? Does the Siam Discovery Mac shop have them? How about the Panthip Mac shops?

Ipod plays MP3s, WAV and AAC (audible books) plus several other formats.

Software (Itunes and others) are now totally windows compatible (Windows XP and 2000 onwards).

Sound quality is generally considered good but inferior to IRiver. Try this site for buckets of details on MP3 stuff.

Oh well... its got to the stage where I ask my questions and then have to answer them myself.

Ipod minis are available in Panthip (but only in green), Fortune Town 4th floor (blue and pink (!) ) and will be available at the Mac shop in Siam Discovery on Monday.

Price Bt14,500 - a near 30% premium to the US and a 20% premium to the UK.

Answering yourself, thats what you get for being so famous, or infamous that you have your own threads forever highlighted on the main board. Now everyone is to scared to answer for fear of getting it all wrong.

By the way, why are they, ipods, more expensive than US and UK, taxes?? or what.

Import taxes taxes in Thailand on anything imported into Thailand are quite excessive...

The majority of goods imported by businesses are subject to rates ranging from 0 per cent to 80 per cent.

The majority of imported articles are subject to two different taxes: tariff duty and VAT. Tariff duty is computed by multiplying the CIF value of the goods by the duty rate. The duty thus determined is added to the value of the goods determined with reference to the CIF price. VAT is then levied on the total sum of the CIF value, duty, and excise tax, if any. Goods imported for re-export are generally exempted from import duty and VAT. Export duties are imposed on only a few items including rice; hides, skins, and leather; scrap iron and steel; rubber, including latex, rubber waste, tree and lump scraps, earth rubber, and bark shavings from rubber trees; teak and other kinds of wood. Tariff duties may be lowered at the discretion of the Minister of Finance with the approval of the Cabinet. Two exceptions to the obligation to pay customs duties apply to the importation of machinery, equipment, and materials for use by: Oil and gas concessionaires and their contractors and certain companies promoted by the Board of Investment.

This is why it's always cheaper to buy foreign products anywhere else besides Thailand.

Here is an article from the Nation about possibly lowering taxes on those goods from Aug 13th:

'Cut taxes on foreign brands to get Thais to shop here'

Published on Aug 13, 2004

Executives at The Emporium shopping complex believe the way to prevent Thais from spending so much abroad on shopping, a reported Bt150 billion last year, is to reduce taxes on both foreign-brand imports and raw materials for local labels.

Kriengsak Tantiphipop, managing director, said last year's Bt150 billion figure could be divided into Bt100 billion for travel expenses and Bt50 billion for actual shopping.

He said reducing taxes would help all brands in Thailand sell at competitive prices. Average prices now are 30 per cent higher than in Europe and 20 per cent higher than in Hong Kong. Reducing import taxes for imports so that they sell cheaper would be a shortcut for Thailand to become a shoppers' paradise like Hong Kong.

He added that Thailand must build up its image as a choice destination for shopping, because competition among Asian countries is growing fierce, especially in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia. Many have even instituted duty-free policies.

Kriengsak said the Tourism Authority of Thailand aimed at generating Bt700 billion from 20 million tourists annually by 2008. Current annual revenue amounts to only Bt300 billion from 10 million tourists.

Revenue falls fall short of the future target because Thailand does not have many items that tourists want to buy, since brandname products are so expensive. He also said the Kingdom did not have as many five-star tourists as Hong Kong or Singapore. Those tourists like to fly to destinations other than Thailand because they can combine travelling abroad with buying brandnames at lower prices than can be found at home.

Each tourist in Thailand spends an average of about Bt4,300 per day, compared with tourists in Hong Kong, who spend Bt50,000 per person per day, and Singapore, with just over Bt33,000 per person per day, said Kriengsak.

If the government does manage to reduce taxes, then he believes the figure for Thailand could jump to as much as Bt14,000 per tourist per day.

He said that among all of the fashion labels in The Emporium, 70 per cent were local. The shopping complex plans, however, to increase the proportion of imported brands to 45 per cent.

Of the 20,000 visitors each day to The Emporium, 30-40 per cent are foreign.
