Having a moble phone is the way to go, but too bad you can not turn off the caller id function on the phone so that you can mask your own identity!! this way the females can not track you down!! I know. Wishfull thinking!!  Have a good one!! ha ha ha!!

Hey, if I wanted to buy a decent 2nd hand mobile in BKK, how much would it cost?  Maybe a refurbished one or a "recovered" one.  I have my own SIM card, just need the mobile itself.

If you go to MBK, you can find 2nd hand mobiles phones for around $50. But ... they are pretty old and kinda larger. But ... you will be able to pick and chose the type and price of phone you want.

Hi all

I just bought a 1-2 Call pre-paid card from a shop in the MBK plaza and stuck it into my nokia phone from India and it worked just fine. Ofcourse I had the salesgirl go through the hassle of initialisation. When I returned to India, just replaced the sim card with my original India sim card and that worked too.

One tip: Many phones have seperate memory available on the phone itself apart from whatever memory comes on the sim card (My Nokia 8250 does.) The numbers stored in the sim card memory are accessible only when that particular sim card is used whereas numbers stored in the phone memory are available while using all sim cards. So it is a good idea to store the tgs' phone numbers in the sim card memory so that they vanish when you go back to the original sim card but are there for you when you put in the Thai sim card on your next trip to LOS (the Bt 500 simcard is valid for 50 days before a recharge is required.)

Contra, if there are phone numbers in your original sim card memory that you might want to call from Thailand, transfer them to your phone memory so that they will be available to you when you use the phone in LOS.

Tyler D,

T-Mobile just rolled out in the states, you can use their phones (if you get approved) when roaming internationally, including in Thailand (pricey at $1.49 a minute).  Haven't used it in bkk yet so don't know about quality but their phones also take a card that you can access like those in bkk, so maybe you can swap out the u.s. card with the thai sim card.  Also check out Virgin Mobile which just came out.

I just got set up internationally with TMobile......rate in LOS is $1.29 per minute.  Better option is to buy a simm card in LOS and put it in your phone.  You need a simm unlock code from TMobile to do it and it takes about 3 days to get it.  They are emailing my unlock code so I can get a local number in LOS but use my phone and not have to pay the roaming fee ($1.29 per min).  Hope this all works....I'll let you know.

guys why all that hassle? as i stated  many, many times before it is so damn cheaper buying a new sim card in a set with a brand new mobile phone such as siemens c45, nokia 3330 or ericsson t29 for about thb 4,500 = €100 = $ 100.
you will get those sets from orange or dtac in any shopping malls such as mbk or the malls in ramkamhaeng or elsewhere. why facing raoming costs or paying money to unlock your old phone when you can get a brand new model + sim card + thb 2,000 phone credit in thailand.
if you take the credit on the card into account you are only paying about usd 50 for a brand new phone + have your own thai mobile number.
abc why pay usd 50 for a second hand old model phone when you can get a new one for the same price?
It does get even better I do have seen some sets with alcatel or philips or low range siemens phones for as cheap as thb 2,900 including credit on your sim card, but this phones are certainly not flashy enough to impress the TG's!

If you're coming from the USA, I wouldnt recommend buying a mobile in thailand since the cheapest phones will be gsm 900/1800 and you wont be able to use it once you get home.

I got a free Nokia 3390 when I signed up with T-Mobile. Then I bought an unlocked Siemens S40 on the net for 120 bucks. Since the Siemens is tri-band I can use it abroad as well as at home, and still have the Nokia as a backup.

Here are 2 options I suggest:

#1 Buy a subsidised world phone from ATT or T-Mobile and then have it unlocked before you leave. If you sign up with T-Mobile, they will usually send you the unlock code for your phone if you tell them you are leaving the country. Otherwise there are many places that will do it for you.  I personally know a shop in LV that unlocks phones for very reasonable prices, and I have used him many times. The advantage here is that you can get the latest and greatest phones for cheap. The disadvantage is that you will have to sign a contract, usually for at least a year.

#2 Buy a phone that is already unlocked from a dealer. They can easily be found by doing a search on the net for gsm phones. You will pay a higher price, but are not locked into any contracts. You can also find many unlocked phones on Ebay, but I recommend checking out the seller very carefully before bidding.

you still do not get it!!!
why searching and paying and paying a higher price than in LOS for a second unlocked phone in the US???
save you rmoney and the hassles and buy it over here!!! About 2 years ago i brought a lot of phones into thailand as they were expensive at that time, nowadays I actually take them back to Europe as they are so damned cheap in Thailand!!!

FYI, since there is a lot of talk about T-Mobile here, my last 2 trips to BKK  (both in the last 6 weeks) my roaming DID NOT work in Thailand.  Really pissed me off.  3 weeks ago it worked in HK, last week it didn't.  3 weeks ago it worked in Jakarta.  It seems completely hit or miss and I've had problems like this for over 2 years.   Sometimes they "wipe" your preferences and say you don't have roaming activated or some such nonsense....   I'm about finished with them.  Before my last trip I called to make sure everything was ok and that i wouldn't have the same problem but of course it still didn't work.    AT&T was 100 times better for me but it requires 2 telephones, one PCS for the US and one GSM for the rest of the world which isn't such a good option.
