I picked up an AIS card at 7-11 when I got here. I was not at all happy with the constant SMS spam messages and notes I got all day long. Which just showed up as blacked out text since my phone doesn't display Thai. My phone never have a chance to go into sleep mode... had to recharge it every day. Thanks to the bartendy at Toxic who made a call from my phone to AIS I would presume, and the annoying messages stopped.

You can make those calls yourself as well, you know - the customer service reps speak English (or, there is an 'English' option when calling)

If your Samsung phone is a tri-band GSM phone you should have no problems. USA "standard" is GSM 1900 band. In Thailand, GSM 1900 is not (or is rarely) used. Instead, GSM 1800 is used by AIS, DTAC and True among others. Here's a chart: http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/cou_th.shtml Just make sure your Samsung is set to automatically scan all GSM bands before you insert your SIM card.

Make sure the phone is unlocked as well. Though getting a phone unlocked in Thailand is pretty easy.

Picked up a DTAC SIM Card for their SIMPLE plan at the DTAC shop on the side of Robinsons/Soi 19. I have been using Orange (True) for several years but up country (Koodoo) I can not get a signal and DTAC can. I like the idea of the SIM card not expiring for a year (once it is topped up). Cost 199bt and got 50bt air time. Two sweet gurls work the shop.

No, they are not all valid for a year. When I first arrived, the cards I got were only good for 90 days. If you recharged them with a little money here and there, they normally extend another 90 days from the date of top-up. I went to a regular DTAC shop, threw on 800 baht and then the card was good for 1 year. The best thing to do is to call the service centre # for your carrier and ask them what their policy is.

From what I understand for DTAC, all the cards are on some kind of a promotion. DTAC lets you switch the promotion on your card at any time, I did it here from the states on their website (search for another thread on this topic to find the URL). Before I had the Baby SIM promotion which gave me low calling and SMS rates. Then I switched to the promotion which gives you a one year extension each time you top it up. But now my calls are 2 baht per minute vs the previous 1 baht per minute. Small price to pay for me since I really am just concerned about keeping the card valid. I was also able to use their website to top up my card while I was here in the states but I had to have someone buy me cards in LOS.

Which carrier should I buy a prepaid sim card from if I plan to do a lot of travelling throughout Thailand? Mainly, which carrier will work in BKK, CM, and Phuket with a good signal and the least amount of problems.
