Odd I am sure I made this post here before but it must have been another cellphone thread...

Be aware that with 12Call there are various discounts that may or may not be better suited to your calling habits...

If you dial *777 and (used to be 2) now 0 2 for english there are about 5 different discount packages available... The basic normal package is after 25 baht useage that day you then have until midnight at 25% discount but you can switch it to a prefered number discount (like a friends and family deal) or my favorite one which is much cheaper calls (about 1/2 price) but you get half the validity time (eg instead of 300 baht = 30 days its 15) there is also the opposite where your calls are more expensive but the time it lasts is double..

Theres a lot of ways to tweak your account to suit your calling patterns and it costs 30 baht to switch packages...

For bros leaving the country you could switch to the expensive calls double timespan before leaving, then add a 1000 baht credit and get 200 days instead of 100 !!!!

If I bring my British mobile phone to Thailand can I buy a Thai Pay As You Go card which will work in it ?
Someone told me that the Thai sysyem is (or used to be) set up so that only phones sold in Thailand could
be used on Thai mobile systems. Has anyone actually brought their British phone to Thailand and got a Thai simcard for it ?

That was old info... Thailand used to charge lareg import duties on phones and as such operators had to use only thai registered (IMEI) phones... That went out the window a couple of years back (and f_cked a nice little beer money operation I had bringing in phones grrr !!!)...

If your phone is sim locked (as many UK pre paids are) try to have it unlocked in the UK for free or get it done here cheaply if its a common phone...

other than that its GSM + Pre paid = good to go..

One thing to check is that your phone is the proper band. In the USA, GSM phones are on the 1900mhz band. In Thailand, some networks are on 900mhz and some are on 1800mhz. If your phone is tri-band and not SIM-locked, you should be OK.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I think One-2-call is 900mhz and DTAC is 1800mhz? Not sure about Orange.

Yes, 1-2-Call is 900, DTAC 1800 and I think Orange also 1800 mhz.

I think ThaiMobile 1900 mhz.

and hutch telecom is CDMA !!

Works in few places in thailand and has a built in tracker option... Useless in most of the country and usless to travel to Europe / worldwide..

TG's know this so any girl advising you to get a Hutch CDMA phone (great deals on the hardware) can see where you are in BKK if the service is turned on !!!!

UK dual band phones will work fine in Thailand. Just bring your phone with you and buy a thai prepaid sim card when you get here.

best.

CG/Dr. Love,

I plan to buy a sims card for my cell phone for my upcoming trip to Thailand. My phone operates on the 1900 mhz frequency here in the U.S., but it's also capable of operating on the 900 mhz. Just to confirm, are 1-2-Call and ThaiMobile the only companies using 900 mhz?

Is MBK the best place to buy one? Are the vendors able to unlock the phone and what do they charge to do this? I plan on using it to make several calls throughout the country and some to the U.S. I figure somewhere between 100-150 minutes in total for a 7+-week stay will be sufficient. Which card do you recommend I buy?

Thanks.

Unlocking a phone will run you between 300 to 400 Baht. Most vendors can accomodate you, but I suggest shopping around, asking questions, etc...

I found the most luck at the very end of the mobile shops, on the fourth floor. They managed to unlock my buddy's phone, upgrade the firmware on my Nokia 6600, and install and update a bunch of new utilities at 100 Baht each.

I hear Orange is pretty good for calls inside Thailand, though I'm personally partial to 1-2-Call. Still, hard to beat Orange's 1 Baht per minute plans...
