Yes, you pay a little more, but you get a lot more in terms of a better computer, better support, and something that holds its value a lot longer, and that you will be able to use a whole lot longer, and get a lot more out of...

Hence the commanding share of the market that Apple has been able to obtain ever since....

Now back to our regularly schedule discussions between the Duck and Mr Alan.

The point is that a Mac is a cult, not a computer. And I mean that quite literally.

I grew up in the cult, my first computer being the Lisa (Mac’s mother). Fortunately, my family (and those who care about me) rescued me in an intervention, and I was able to free myself from the bondage of the “true-believers.”

Here in L.A. I'm ready to walk in to Best Buys and buy a laptop...

This poor guy asked a reasonable question for someone that is not too computer saavy and he get pages of ideological (and nonsensical) bullshit bickering....

Bottom line:
Both Apple and Windows platforms will do what you want

You need to be clear on your requirements (ie burning DVDs, playing movies on an external, using the laptop like a DVD player, etc.

Set a budget you can live with

Decide what you want as a "life-expectancy" of this purchase

Get as much RAM as you can afford

And finally......pay little to no attention to the quibbling amongst the boyz here

I have purchased more than 4000 laptops over the years. For me, warranty is an issue. It is not IF it breaks, it is WHEN. I do not advocate paying for the "extended warranties" from the retailers but some vendors have machines with 3 year warranty. They tend to be better quality machines. If you look at this as a disposable item, mai pen rai.

I think I already know the answer to this but all computer manufactures have a customer support number to call so you can reach a representative to ask whatever question you may have

Here's a fun walk down memory lane. When the Macintosh was released in the 80's Apple didn't provide any phone support. Instead they would refer you to user groups like Berkeley Macintosh Users.

I'm sure this bit of the past is irrelevant to any current discussion.

Oh yes. I am quite sure also.

Just try and google "apple support problems."

The warranty is for one year, but "so-called" phone support is only for 90 days.

You would be better off consulting an independent Apple forum anyway, because Apple has a nasty tendency to delete posts on their own forum that speak of "problems" that are a little too embarrassing.

Well, Alan, I think in generally you just established well enough that you have a couple or personal axes to grind. Thanks for making that obvious.

Google ANY computer provider for support problems and you will see a never ending list.

IMHO those of you that are so vehement about this have little understanding of the reality....Sort of like religious zealots or the Jim Jones types

I suggest BK start a new thread where certain members can just piss on each other (not Z) and let others who ask questions get semi-reasonable answers

Get a life Duckhead. If I had an axe to grind, it would not be to use against Apple, it would be for some nice roast duck.

We are talking about a bunch of friggin computers. Inanimate objects. No body cares about it except you.
