----------------------------------------------------------------- but I suggest shopping around, asking questions, etc... ----------------------------------------------------------------- Yes, lean over on the counter, put on your best Humphrey Bogart face and say with a deep voice: 'Hey, buddy listen carefully I've got some work for you...' ---------------------------------------------------------------- hear Orange is pretty good for calls inside Thailand ----------------------------------------------------------------- Let's change that inside Bangkok, although it has good coverage outside Bangkok in major cities. It usually gets a problem when you get in remote villages.

My buddy has orange and even in an area like Phuket is is crap compared to 1-2-call or DTAC... Also wit 12Call you can use the *777 and set up freedom bonus at 2.5 baht per minute for Thai calls... Thats cheap enough surely...

Freedom bonus is only valid for a short time (30 days credit you have to spent in 15 days). So limitations. And any idea how much you lose by getting charged for a whole minute? Orange as said is the first 30 seconds 2.5 baht then 1 baht per minute. No limitations at all. Plus with the 199 baht sim card you get 700 baht free calls. And per second billing. Furthermore, if you don't top up with AIS within 7 days.. your simcard is a gonner. Orange gives you more than a month. Orange has special features like transferring money between phones. Except for better signal outside the major cities (I bet Phuket Town is good), I don't see any reason to use AIS or DTAC in Bangkok or major cities. Typical call 15 minutes AIS Freedom 15 x 2.5 = 37.50 baht Orange 1 x 2.50 + 14.5 minutes x 1 = 17 baht Freedom is cheap? At over twice the rate of Orange? For me, a person who almost never leaves Bangkok, Orange rules! Mr. Orange, am I hired?

Couple of other things about Orange: - can confirm that coverage outside of BKK can be crap, to non-existent. One of my 'special friends' in Udon Thani (where else) gets absolutely no coverage in her village, and barely reception in the city itself. - She can apparently send international SMS now (Thanks, Doc), but the messages I receive come from the talk.to gateway, from what it appears. This is different from 1-2-call messages, where they come from the actual phone number - i.e. 'reply' is easier. - On the other hand, my 1-2-call SIM card suddenly stopped working in the US (it has plenty of charge, and I have international roaming turned on), after initially working just fine. I confirmed my status of charge and international roaming last time in September in BKK, but the moment we hit Hong Kong, my phone had a 'zero' on the reception bars, and would not talk to any local carriers in China or the US - making my intention to top back up in 90 days a quandary (good thing I'll be back in November, eh?) Any ideas on what might be going on there, Oh Doctor of Mobile Telephony? Harry

Quote: from sputnik on 2:02 pm on Oct. 17, 2004 My phone operates on the 1900 mhz frequency here in the U.S., but it's also capable of operating on the 900 mhz. Just to confirm, are 1-2-Call and ThaiMobile the only companies using 900 mhz?
DTAC and Orange are 1800 mhz, so you will probably want to buy a 1-2-call chip. I do not know anything about ThaiMobile. MBK is the place to go if you need the phone unlocked. If you just need the chip, MBK or FortuneTown are probably the cheapest places, but you can get a chip at the phone shop in Robinsons Sukhumvit Soi 17 or at the phone shop next to KFC on Suk between Soi 3 and Soi 1. If all you need is the chip, it is not worth a trip to MBK unless you want to gawk at the hot sales clerk in the womens department at Toku.

So you get 15 days from a top up card instead of 30... I think I have a couple of years added on to my phone at the moment (remember its not 15 days from the card purchase its 15 days ADDED to you existing length). For me a total non issue..

Not true.. Dont know how long they do give but its in the order of months.. I had an 'old' sim left by a visiting friend.. New mate arrived put chip in phone.. Bought credit.. Charged it up.. must have been 3 - 5 months out of credit or use.
Except for better signal outside the major cities (I bet Phuket Town is good), I don't see any reason to use AIS or DTAC in Bangkok or major cities.
Well I live in a major town (patong) My mates phone will sit there with service bars and just not ring when I call it.. His calls get dropped all the time.. He is always having marginal signal issues when cruising around the island (Phuket is not somewhere far out in the sticks) Basically he is junking his Orange sim and getting a 12Call
Typical call 15 minutes AIS Freedom 15 x 2.5 = 37.50 baht Orange 1 x 2.50 + 14.5 minutes x 1 = 17 baht Freedom is cheap? At over twice the rate of Orange?
So you have saved 20 baht... Do you teach english and get paid in shiny beads and pretty shells :p Is the inconvienience and or unprofessionalism of one lost call or missed contact worth that kind of saving ?? Not to me.
For me, a person who almost never leaves Bangkok, Orange rules!
For anyone outside BKK.. For anyone that likes easy SMS gateways.. For relaibility... etc then I just dont see that 20 baht saved in a 15 min call (most of mine are 1 min calls anyway so it would be 0 saving) worth even considering.. Also whats oranges GPRS rates like on pre pay ?? Whats thier support dept like on configureing your phone for GRPS and assisting in setting it up with you brand of laptop ?? AIS stunned me at walking a total PC idiot through each and every menu setting on his new nokia and his laptop until it all clicked together.. called him back and spent maybee 1/2 an hour with him patiently explaining things like 'start button.. lower left of screen.. control panel... modem settings' etc while I would have been screaming at him wondering if he had had a lobotomy. I have no DTAC experience but I have used cheaper phone providers in the past and always tend to stick now with a major carrier.

With Freedom Plus with 1-2-call, your expiry date will be reset to 15 days from the day you sign up... this is important to know. Also, the max validity time you can build up with Freedom Plus is 90 days. More info in this thread: http://bkkx.com/cgi-bin/forum/topic.cgi?forum=29&topic=54

Thai Mobile is 1900 mhz, not 900 mhz. Furthermore, LivininLOS, you must have enjoyed too much of Phuket sunshine. ------------------------------------------------------------------ So you get 15 days from a top up card instead of 30... I think I have a couple of years added on to my phone at the moment (remember its not 15 days from the card purchase its 15 days ADDED to you existing length). For me a total non issue.. ------------------------------------------------------------------- I think ColoradoGuy has set you already on the right path... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Not true.. Dont know how long they do give but its in the order of months.. I had an 'old' sim left by a visiting friend.. New mate arrived put chip in phone.. Bought credit.. Charged it up.. must have been 3 - 5 months out of credit or use. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- I've used 1-2 Call for years. If you what you said is true, what's the use of an expiry date? 7 days after your expiry date, the number is taken out of use. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Well I live in a major town (patong) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- For your information, Patong is not considered a town or city. Phuket has only one major town or city... Phuket Town. Did your friend have trouble there? ------------------------------------------------------------------- So you have saved 20 baht... Do you teach english and get paid in shiny beads and pretty shells :p Is the inconvienience and or unprofessionalism of one lost call or missed contact worth that kind of saving ?? Not to me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I don't teach English, I am an IT consultant. Anyway I don't see what teaching English has to do with getting a better deal? This was an example for only one call... but as you probably make only one call a month.. you're right. And no, I don't use GPRS. But have you ever tried the menu downloads and special features Orange uses? The issue is, and I repeat, Orange rules if you never leave Bangkok.

Good to know. The Freedom promotion you are on must be different than the "Freedom Plus" one I am on. For those thinking of switching, it might be worth a call to the call center to clarify the current rules of each promotion available.
