That was actually my point - you've clearly established that you both know very little about the Mac, and that you do not care for it. I only pointed out that you had axes to grind - thanks for confirming your bias.

DD, if I don't get back to you for awile it's because !'m trying to research & educate myself so my next round of questions will hopefully make sense and demonstrate I've done some homework so my purchase will be a prudent one

Besides, I consider it a public service. If I were ever to be convicted of drunk-driving, and sentenced to 80 hours of public service, once I showed the judge my posts, I am quite certain he would suspend my sentence.

Does anybody find it ironic that the member who pushes APPL incessantly complains when somebody objects to APPL because they "have an axe to grind?"

Bottom line:
Both Apple and Windows platforms will do what you want
You need to be clear on your requirements (ie burning DVDs, playing movies on an external, using the laptop like a DVD player, etc.
Set a budget you can live with
Decide what you want as a "life-expectancy" of this purchase
Get as much RAM as you can afford
I am fortunate or maybe unfortunate enough to use Computer with the 3 major Operating Systems on them. My business lives in a Windows world and a switch between a Windows XP Pro Desk Top to a Vista Ultimate Laptop, both have minor issues from time to time but get the job done and are compatible with all the Software I need to run without using a sometime flaky emulator.
Yes, we have a fairly recent hi end Mac used for Media work, its fine, not bug free (in fact at first the operating system upgrade was far more error prone than Vista, although to Apples credit they sorted it) but fairly user friendly. Not much of a Gaming Machine though, not enough games available for the platform!
I also have a very cute EEE Ultra Portable PC from Asus, cheap as chips (a little over $300 USD) and tiny in size it uses Linux which is very stable & has an amazingly fast Start up or shutdown time (anything is fast compared to Vista). If all you want to do is some surfing the Internet, checking Email & going through basic stuff such as simple Photo Editing, Word Documents etc this is a great machine.
It comes Preloaded with just about everything you could need (I don't think anybody has mentioned how much the Software will be for a Mac or Windows PC!!), built in WiFi. Get the 8Gb one if you can, upgrade the Ram to 1 Gb (30 seconds work & a no brainer) then get an 8Gb SD Card. More than enough memory for Non Graphical usage. If you need space get a plug in USB Hard Drive.
The whole thing will not cost you less $600 with the extra memory! The other cheap charlie alternative is to go to Best Buys as I did a couple of weeks back and get one of the price leader $450 Toshiba Laptops. There fine & and a good place to start. I bought 2! Just ignore the salesman spiel on all things that you should buy with it. Use freeware, Open Office for Word processing etc & AVG Free for Virus Protection.

The Windows based PC is the only gaming PC to have. I myself don't play any games on a PC as reading Mel's posts keeps me amused.
