Heck moblie arent cheap in Thailand even used ones. They are giving em away free in USA if your under contract. Get new ones for family plan and take older one to Thailand and they will put SIM chip inside with number for you then get calling card along with.
Thai phone companies are still getting profits there and so it aint so free as western countries.

A link that might help out people looking for an unlocked GSM phone. I used this company to buy a Motorola when I traveled to Spain this past Summer. Hope this helps.

Who are the main players in cellular service in Thailand? I'd like to get a pre-paid SIM before I leave so any information would be helpful.

Thanks to all the Bro's who posted to this thread!

I will arrive in BKK this Friday and MBK will be my first stop.

Am considering either a Sony Ericsson T610 Tri-Band GSM World Phone (Unlocked) or a Motorola P7389 - tri-band unlocked.

I want to use the cell in LOS, China & the USA and the photo feature is optional!

Are their any latest thoughts re: the best cell phone to buy and the best BKK provider to use?

Here is my experience on buying a cell phone.

Nokia is the best used phone to buy since parts are so common over there. I decided to buy a new Sony Ericson phone (tri band) since it was cheaper than buying a used Nokia.

My phone was a simple small phone for $104 US and that included a sim card (minutes and phone number).
I bought it in Pattaya Big C shopping mall at the second counter in the middle in the tech area of the mall.

In case you dont understand (like I didnt) about how cells work over there, here is how it works.
-on a cell there is no charge to recieve a call
-there is only a charge to make a call
-there are 2 local rates, one rate is for calling land line phones (cheaper) and the other rate is for calling other cell phones (more expensive because you are paying for the towers and such).
-when you buy a sim card (which you need) you will get a phone number and some money on it (the reason it is baht and not time is because you have 2 rates for phone calls) so lets say you get a card with 100 baht worth of time on a card that could be either 33 minutes to a land line (3 baht per min) or 20 min to a cell (5 baht per minute) for example. You can recharge your card anytime with a credit card.
-If you run down your sim card and you dont use it for a long time you will loose your phone number and it will be recycled, next time you want to use it, buy a new card (about 300 baht).

I bought tri band since I should be able to use it in more countries than just Thailand. All I have to do is buy a sim card for that country when I go there. (new number)
Just ask if you have more questions

The best provider in BKK (and the whole of Thailand) ?

I would say 1-2-call (AIS). Best network......

Best phone? You really didn't expect an answer, is it?

Thanks dougtr & DrLove -

Just the input I needed. I'll struggle with the selection of the phone, but feel more comfortable with the procurement process now that I understand how the system works and the best provider.

I'll buy the beer when we meet -

One of the TG I spoke to reccomended Orange, as I was using my phone to ring UK. She said Orange international calling was 20bt a min.
I`d already bought a 1-2-call sim and it was costing around 45bt a min.

Hope this helps.

Orange is cheap for a reason. Poor coverage/service when compared to AIS or DTAC.

Too late! I would choose HappyDprompt over One2Call.

The earlier poster is wrong about differing costs to landlines and mobiles.
One2call does have differing charging levels, though that is based on calling between provinces and distance. Give them a miss, unless you are going off the beaten track.
HappyDprompt is 5 baht per min for the first two minutes and 2.5 baht per minute thereafter. plus you can pick a timeslot where calls are 2.5 baht per min throughout.
Domestic & International SMS are 3 baht each. Compared to 9 baht for AIS/One2Call.

One2call use confusion marketing, to make you think you are getting a good deal.
Witness their Freedom Plus promotion. You get the 2.5 baht calls, but you lose all previously stored airtime and get only half (or less) the airtime printed on the recharge card. ie 600 baht and 15 days for a 300 baht and 30 day airtime recharge card. The higher denominations give you even less than half the printed airtime.
Why bother, when HD give you the 2.5 baht calls without the catches?

Orange is fine on the main drag. Bangkok, Pattaya etc. As little as 1.5 baht per minute.
