I am a frustrated SMS sender too, I have tried all the network scams and the messages never got through to my friends. Luckily I did find one that finally works (after countless emails to the company to work out the bugs) but you will have to pay for the service. I think it is something like $5 for 14 messages. The company is http://www.Bigfoot.com and you have to install their software program.
Send a test message and if it doesn't work, email their customer service and they will respond. When sending to Thailand (for example purposes I will use the mobile # 09-555-1234) type in +6695551234, type in your msg and hit send. This should work but again, it will cost you. The person receiving also can't respond to your message but at least they will receive it and know you are thinking of them. Sure it costs a few bucks but it will bring a smile to a certain special someone's face.

ps - I know ICQ has a system that also works, I just have been unsuccessful. I think the ICQ one only works for the 01 mobile numbers, unfortunately the girl I am currently infatuated with has a 09 #, so I am a BigFoot man.

ICQ works for 09 numbers. It just doesn't work for numbers that can not send sms back to international numbers -like some 1-2-call numbers.

You've said this before Smegma....but my 1-2-Call number has no problem SMS internationally....sending and receiving.

And I will say it again: some 1-2-call numbers can not call internationally. My old 1-2-call doesn't. And any number that can not send international sms does not receive sms from ICQ.
The above is true. I do not know about your number, but I believe you can send sms.
If it doesn't work most of the time ... then to me something doesn't work. Most 1-2-call numbers can not send sms internationally.

My friend was able to send me an SMS message from her phone which starts with 01. The address of the message shows 6615555555@2talk.to
I assume an SMS back to that address would work. Your thoughts?

I am not sure it will work. It looks as though sent through an email gateway. I suggest you be daring and have the courage to try and find out. I am sure no harm will come by trying.

I have 1-2-call and international text messages (both sent and received) work fine
the trick is not to use the 001 prefix
actually I was pleasantly surprised to see international phone numbers on my caller ID when receiving calls also -
