Yes, I'm an old chap who has been visiting LOS decades before mobile telephones were invented. Now I would appreciate a spot of advice.
I am visiting for three weeks at Christmas and beleive that a mobile telephone should be quite useful.
1. Should I rent one at BKK airport?
2. If I rent it there will it work in Phuket?
3. Should I rent another in Phuket?
4. Is there any way of adapting my U.S. mobile to work in Thailand?
5. I visit LOS (mostly Phuket) about thrice a year, so would it be worth my while to buy a local mobile phone? After all, one has a feeling of being almost naked in Thailand without one?
I am sure that thgse are all very simplistic questions for you tech buffs, but I come out of another age. Any advice, would be gratefully received.

OLDTIMER,
One member of the old gang just got a SIM card from MBK. "1-2 Call" system I reckon. He paid around B/.700.
Each time he arrives Bangkok he just "change" the SIM card of his own mobile phone and start using it....THAT'S IT. He use to buy some "call cards" in MBK as well (the ones with some fixed amount of money on them). These cards allow him to make domestic phone calls till the "call card" finishes it's credit....
I think you should do the same but if you go Phuket with this mobile phone you might be charged with a long distance call (within Thailand)....you better decide if buying a SIM card does worth or not during your trip. Hope this helps....

I also use 1-2 call, never had a problem using it any place I travelled to in Thailand. Last time I was there I found out you can make international calls with that system.All I do is recharge my line when I return to LOS. I average 4 trips a year. 5 days till i return!

I have an urgent request as I am leaving on monday for Bkk and need info on call back services and would like to set this up b/f I leave. I understand that incoming calls on mobiles with Thai sim cards are free, and would like to call US. Has anyone used such a service and can tell me who to contact. Greatly appreciate any input.

You can use, http://www.wanttocall.com they have a local number you can use. Call that number and with in 2 sec you have a ring tone then you dial the number like you do in the states. You can also use it with in the states.
You can sign up in Thailand as well using your redit card. Calling us is 0.059 dollars us

Your sim card will work anywere no problem. Even in Laos if you would like to taste the girls there.
