What are the Thai electricity wall sockets like?  Can't seem to remember.  They British, US or European (eg France) type?

Most are like European. Two small, round holes.

Most sockets that I see here are like in many other 3rd world countries undecided about following one standard or the other. And in this case, this is one area where many 3rd w.c. have got it better than many in the 1st world.

The sockets here -at least in not very old buildings- accept more than one kind of plug. The 2 flat blades ones like in the USA, and the 2 round pin ones like in many European countries. This is a cosmopolitan non-discriminating socket willing to be penetrated by appliances made for different markets

With so much fuss and talk about standards for any new electronic and PC related technology, it still amazes that for electrical-power related matters, no much progress has been made on standards: different plug and sockets, different voltages (from 110 to 240), different frequencies (50 and 60Hz).  At least some electronics equipment suppliers have been getting smart selling automatic multi-voltage chargers.

To summarize, for the guy who travels a lot and may have bought appliances in different places, Thailand ends up being a friendly place when it comes to needing fewer adaptors.

Yep, 2 prong, 220V 50 Hz single phase. The sockets are US type (two flat prongs in parallel to each other) or German (two round pins).

Lots of places sell the universal type adapters that fit one of these types and then will accept just about anything. I have used these succesfully to run photo equipment with Australian (weird) plugs.

THERE IS NO PROVISION IN THAI HOUSEHOLD OR APT/OFFICE MAINS FOR EARTHING (GROUNDING). If you are lucky and have access to the earth you can ground your equipment yourself. If not then you will be living dangerously.

It isn't that the Thais don't know about grounding; Thai government buildings all have earthed electrical systems. But they don't require it for residential/commercial buildings. VERY BAD.

Typical circuit breakers at home are 15 Amperes or about 3.3 KW (KVA). Air conditioners may be more (mine are 30 A nreakers and crazily bypass the power box and are fed straight from the 100 Amp meter. I think what I have is an 80 Amp service (that's what the main fuses are marked.)  A typical house has a lot less than that.

So my advice is, wear shoes when operating electrical appliances in your house (goes against Thai custom). Obviously, don't stand in water when doing so. Don't use any mains powered appliances around bathtub/sink. Earth/ground anything (everything if possible.)

The ones I have checked (my place and office) have the capability to take both: one can insert in the same socket either type of plug.

All of that may be true but have any of you thought about the lack of consideration for privacy  and respect ...oh wait, you mean this thread is NOT about that stuff?

Sorry, couldn't resist. Carry on.

 Good one MrJoe.

I am getting so tired of all the privacy discussion (same things repeated again and again and again) that today, so far, this seem to be the only thread where I want to participate -I know I am making happy a few out there.

I will keep reading. Maybe I will find an interesting thread about where to buy a hammer. Oh! I see some activity in a thread about ATMs. There I go
