Can anyone recommend PC experts in town? Either members or non-members who can do house calls, to revive a sick hard disk. If there is a member out there who can help send me a PM. There is a member who I happen to meet last night, who has a problem.

Anyway, this would be a good thread to list PC tech-support service providers here as well.

If you can descibe your problem I can probably step you threw a fix. most repair personel in thailand will just format your hard drive and reload it with a terrible version of the latest OS (operating system). Try to give me certain details, Operating System, Virus software and programs loaded, also is the information on the harddrive needed or can it be erased.

Whats wrong with it?

BK... if I heard the member correctly the problem was twofold: a) the machine won't boot, and b) the owner is reluctant to take it to a repair shop because of the extensive collection of "dubious content" that resides on the hard drive. Catch 22 you might say. Tough to get treatment if you can't trust the doctor.

If the offensive content is dispensible then it could be deleted with a disc utility. If it is something that needs to be saved, that's a cat of a different color.

Slap a second (new) hard drive in the sucker, disconnect the old drive, reinstall the operating system, reconnect the drive before you reboot after the reinstall.
Your system will boot, and you have access to all of your content on the secondary drive.

Mr Alan
Not all boot problems are hard drive related. It could be a bios problem. I have seen some viruses that were on Adobe software CD's from Panthip that deliberately hose the bios.

The BIOS is hardware. How can it hose the BIOS?

Actually the BIOS is software embedded on a chip.

You can actually 'blank' out the BIOS or alter it when installing new hardware.

Sometimes parameters are reset (like HDD parameters) without any apparant reason.
