One problem with the first generation Iphone is that it only have GPRS/EDGE and it does not have 3G service. This will not prevent me from buying one but I predict apple will come out with one that equip with 3G which will make the phone much more useful in real life situation.
Cingular 8525 is not a bad phone as it have pretty much everything u need including 3G service and it is faster than previous generation, however, it is still bit slow for my taste. therefore,n ow is in my old phone pile.

This is almost so funny a decision, it's tragic. Not only will you be sorry you got it, but you will be locked into a contract when you realize that you want the iPhone.
This short before launch, to make a phone purchase decision seems silly to the utmost...

Daffy, I am in a phone contract now, I am going to update my 8125.... my problem is that I need a lot of the features of the yodated 8125 including removable storage cards for I can move tons of files around. Although not the best phone, it has done the job. I also get 3G.
But as with all pohnes, it will last a year, then on to the next one. I amnot a photo guy so that feature doesn't excite memore than being able to move lots of files, Word, Excel, etc.
And, yes, the ms operating system sucks. if I could find a small phone that would give me IM video capability I would be a lot happier.
truthism iam trying to find a way to dump my lap top and use myphone, but I hav enot found a device/pda that gets me there as yet..... soon, I think.... the issue is also size.....

Clearly, you are resisting Nokia's Series 60 offerings, which would fit that bitt.
In the next iteration, phones in order of usability and practicality, will be:
- iPhone (the fact that a full version of Safari runs on it is the secret component that everyone seems to be missing -- so be it)
- Nokia Series 60 (or comparable S60 phone, though Nokia has best support across platforms) - N73 is damn good, or the N95.
There is no third entry.

While I'm sure the iphone will perform well, I'm not too excited about the mandatory 2 year contract with AT&T.

Or does the need to use AT&T's international roaming only apply to customers who purchase one in the US?
If this were an unlocked phone where I can swap pre paid SIM cards at will and be able to opt out of any sort of contract I'd get one.

Quite frankly I worry about Apples ability to come through with a bug free iphone - I just dont see it happening.
Fact is Apple doesnt know anything about phones...
Look at the problems Nokia have had with their Nseries smartphones. The iPhone incorporates every conceivable gadget that you could think of putting in a phone, uses the "most sophisticated operating system in the world" (i.e. completely untested in mobile phones) and is the first phone that Apple have ever made. I seriously doubt whether it will deliver the goods.
Phones are not toys/gadets like an ipod and people expect them to work instantaneously 24/7, bug and crash free...
