Hi All,
I was wondering if any forum vets out there who bring along their cell phone from the U.S. and purchase a sim card in LOS, does your U.S. phone number change or is it the same. I'm planning to bring my phone with me and wanted to give it out to a few bro's here. Also, is MBK the only place where you can buy the sim card? How much does it cost. Thanks.

what do you mean with your us number changing?
you can buy sim cards all over thailand including some airtime credit for as cheap as thb 600! this does include thb 300 credit! (1-2-call, dtac or orange)

Hi Cali,
When you buy a SIM, the number is preprogrammed, so with a Thai SIM, you get a Thai phone number, when you insert it. When you return to the states, just pop the old SIM in, and you have your old number back.
Some phones have a 'store phonebook to SIM' option, and 'read phonebook from SIM' option. Be sure to store all your contacts on the SIM before replacing it, or you might lose all those cuties' numbers!
All of this presupposes that you have a Triband (World) phone. US uses 1900MHz, and Thailand is 900/1800MHz.
You can buy SIMs at MBK, where you will be able to choose your telephone number from a list at most vendors, or you can buy a 'starter kit' from the many cellphone shops around town. There are a lot at Skytrain station platforms.

I mean if my u.s cell number is ie. 949-123-4567, i go buy one of the sim cards you mentioned, and if for example, you wanted to contact me (we're both in Bkk), would you just dial 1-949-123-4567. simple as that? if so, that's cool.

your us sim will probably not work in thailand unless you have a t-mobile one! the usa have another system then the rest of the world, that's why you will hav eto buy a thai sim card!
as soon as you insert the thai sim card in your phone you will be only contactable on your new thai number. that is what you buy the sim card for + the ability to make cheaper calls as the roaming fees will not apply!

thanks for the clarification bro'. I have a Samsung S105-Tri-band, one of the newer phones in u.s. with color screen. I believe my phone has the option to save numbers on both the sim card or phone. Thanks for the heads up, as i will save any cuties numbers on the sim card. btw, do you know whether you can call internationally with these sims card?

thats why some of "us" here carries two phones, or should i say an extra phone.
that way, u wont miss any calls from TGs and friends at home!!

well, as mentioned before in many other threads:
brand new mobile phones are available in packages for as low as thb 3,500 including a sim card and a thb 2,000 airtime credit! if you do not mind spending some extra thb 1,000 for a brand new mobile phone this is certainly the way to go!
most people i do know actually do have two ohones here as it is so much more practical. also you can better shift numbers or switch off one phone in case you do need to shuffle around your TG's once they cause too much of a trouble!

i'll probably consider getting a second phone, should the TG's issues arise- probably when i become a seasoned pro like many of you vets. right now, i can't wait for my first trip to LOS. Liftoff in 6 days. Thanks again guys.
