this may be a little off kilter, but does anyone know if computer programmers in Thailand program their code in English or whatnot?

I have never heard of a Thai-specific programming language, as far as I know everyone program in English. The most popular languages are the usual suspects: C++, Pascal, Java, Visual Basic etc. Personally I have toyed with Fortran Power Station and Visual Basic, much preferring the former, but then I was just porting some old US government fortran code to Wintel, and the VB was for a GUI front end. All this was just to keep from getting bored a while back, I don't do this for a living. Naturally, all this stuff can be had for a song here; the books cost more than the software and you don't really need the books unless you are a print happy dinosaur like me. Anyway I am confidant that coding is all in English. One can of course arrange for Thai comments in the code and for Thai prompts in the executable. The local Windows is English/Thai switchable.

The development of a Thai specific prograamming language, if it had any point at all, was probably deeply discouraged by the need to also create a highly optimized and efficient Thai specific compiler. I mean, in compiling fortran to run on a Wintel system, it makes a huge difference whether one is using a free compiler or actually went out and bought a good compiler...in terms of the size and running speed of the resulting executable. So, as an academic Thai compiler would probably be a relative clunker, this would cripple everything from the git-go. The Thais are still trying to get Thai OCR to work, it does so about as well as English OCR did a decade ago, which is to say, it is still a toy not a tool.

AFAIK all programming languages are in "English" , at least the syntax is English derived. Even ABAP/4, which is the base language for SAP (which is a German company) is done in English, although most of the variable names and notes are done in German or abbreviated German.

This may be off subject, but since you guys seem to know computing you may be able to help me. I would like to write Thai e-mail using some pre printed script and phrases. I have downloaded MS Thai for the keyboard and can save to file, but haven't been able to write directly with the exception of some translation websites. Is anyone aware of a source for programs that would enable me to copy or paste from a source and not come out in giberish text. I may not be asking the right questions but hope someone can decipher what I am talking about any discussion would help. Thanks.

I take it you are not in Thailand and are not using Windows Thai Edition? That's your solution. Get the Thai Edition. I use 95, as 98 was trash and I do not trust ME, 2000 or XP at all.

chateaujade - both win2k and xp (both home and pro) are great! tough yet easy to use. for personal use, xp can't be beat. i agree that 98 and me (pretty much the same) are utter crap and wouldn't touch them with a 10 ft pole.

Sup': I prefer W2k professional over xp. w2k is built on the nt platform and acts and handles itself more like nt. Also, with W2K you can load the "hack' version of software that you buy in Asia. With Xp you will have problems because it sends more information over the internet back to MS about what kinda of software you are running as well as the licenses on the computer. Most developers should be using Java, or C++ which is the same in Thailand as in the U.S chateaujade: W95?? Why??? That operating system is so old and ancient. Why not upgrade?? If you do not trust W2K or XP, then why use W95 at all. Reinstall your systsem with W2K and you will have no problems. I use it at work for development and have left my system up for 3 months straight without shutting down and it never crashed. But, if you really do not like Microsoft products, then go to Unix base systems or Lynx. I personally like using a a Sun box running Unix for development!!
