Ipods are available in Bangkok - Panthip for instance. Iriver have just appointed a distributor here, so their products are either here now or will be within a couple of weeks.

There is a six week wait for these in the USA, why? Because the disk drives used these minis are Made in Thailand at the Hitachi disk drive plant. Welcom to Thai-speed. Hitachi is staffing up from 8000 to 12000 in the coming months to hopefully reduce this leadtime to 0 before Christmas. After that I would assume they will be available in LOS.

Quote: from Smegma on 4:59 pm on July 29, 2004 Ipod's dirty secret. Those considering buying it, may want to see this video first. I had heard about this before. But now from rumour, it made it into video. http://homepage.mac.com/kenrohde/ipodsecretvid/ipodsecretvid.mov
STUPID, STUPID, STUPID! Please do not contribute to spreading rumors that NO LONGER HOLD TRUE. These kids did a good job getting lots of attention by spreading these rumors, that are in contrast to reality. My experience: 1st gen and 2nd gen iPods (5gb and 10gb), puchased two years ago: Battery lasts 10 hours on one charge. I used to play them more or less continuously. On has started to show a reduction in charge to roughly 8 hours. 3rd gen iPods (red buttons) have a default reduction in battery life to 8 hrs. Most of my friends have no issue with the battery life since these models first came out. 4th gen iPod (click wheel) [which I just bought a 40gb version), have a true 12 hour battery life, and are undoubtedly (IMO) the very best variant of the iPod so far. If you're going to get one, get that one! Also, regarding iPod battery issues: - ANY battery wil wear down and lose capacity with time. This is to be expected. - You can purchase Apple's AppleCare for the iPod for $59, which extends your coverage to 3 years. Battery replacement is covered by this, and that alone makes it well worth the investment. - You can purchase third party battery replacement kits for between $39-$59, or have those same shops do the replacement for you for $20 more. Hence, the statement in that video are false. Harry

Not necesarily. (BTW, read my signature) What you are saying is that IF you pay an additional US$59 to Apple, battery replacement is covered during a 3 year period. You also said that you can buy replacements kits from third party vendors (wow! in my days changing batteries was easy and simple, buy the battery and change it). Now, what happens IF you DID NOT buy the additional AppleCare thing for the Ipod and after the warranty has lapsed, your battery died and you naively walked into an Apple store a year ago (say before third party vendors started selling their kits) ? You didn't convince me that Apple gave an easy cheap solution. You may be happy with your units. That is a specific case. But what about the statistiscally unlucky (yes, it happens that some things break down) to whom this happened some time ago. BTW, as of this time Apple charges US$105.95 for battery servicing. ( http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/battery.html ) Go to google and type "ipod+battery+problem" and you will get lots of links. Many are from serious sources. Oh! and who were you calling stupid? Watch out, because I can teach you a thing or two young Harry. Some words may not fit your mouth and may not look good on you using them at your tender age.

IMO: instead of buying electronics in Asia, just Ebay it. You can find great deals on new products there for a cheap price. Not to mention that I've found that buying electronics in Asia is the same price, if not more then buying it in the U.S from a retale store. And, there are so many new products coming to the market place for mp3 players. Just check out yesasia.com. http://us.yesasia.com/en/SrAllDept.aspx?searchby=p&str=mp3%20player§ion=index&did=0&code=c&version=all&p=1 If you want one of the newest gaget, then look at: JNC SSF-810 (Silver) MP3 Player 1GB On ebay you can get iRiver iFP-790 256MB MP3 Player for $139.99.
