As a little follow up to another post about buying used stuff for my gf's apartment, I wanted to know about satellite tv costs in bangkok.

right now my gf just has the standard thai channels.. maybe 5 of them.  pretty crap for me when i'm over.  therefore i'd like to hook her up with some premium channels such as HBO and whatever else is available (and CNN or BBC for me might be nice).

anyone know the costs and options available?  does it depend on the building she is in, or is this handled outside?  is it expensive?

thanks for any advice!

UBC has a few different deals going, when we got ours hooked up several months ago it cost 8000b for the connection, 4000b for a bond and then 1400b per month. The 8000 included a mobile phone which we did not want so sold it to the tech doing the installation for 4000b, which is the normal cost of install, a few months ago they had a similar deal with a TV, but I presume if you don't want or need a TV then you could ask to just have simple connection which should be around 4000, plus the deposit 4000 and first months rent 1400 so total of 9400b. there is also another company who does a sattelite dish and they charge for the dish and installation only, but that costs around 20,000, but no ongoing monthly fees, but you cannot get UBC, just lots of asian channels, cnn, bbc and australian tv, with this dish it also moves when you change channel to allign with the sat.

IMHO, don't get satellite. Everytime there is some atmospheric disturbance (rain...) the TV turns to sh*t. My apartment has a satellite and it becomes useless during any kind of rain.

Atypical, true. During rain the satellitte signal is disturbed. But it happens not very often and is no longer that 20-30 minutes or so.

zzzzZ, you might see if UBC cable is available in your neighbourhood. If so, you could also apply for a two way fast internet cable connection.

there are some decent satellite providers in BKK other than UBC. although the one main caveat is that you would need a house or access to the rooftops of your apartment building (not sure on condos).

a few friends here have purchased a satellite package at Pantip for 43,000 baht. no monthly fees, includes 2 Satellite dishes and 1 cable box.

I will mention that the satellites are wee bit large in size, thus the need for a house or rooftop. maybe a little over a meter in diameter but no more than 1.5m

signal strength depending on time of day, weather, scrambling etc etc. access of channels in Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, other SE asian channels. about 400+ channels.

from what I have seen and watched you get about 50 channels of international sports.

Pantip is a rather large place, and if another person tries to sell me a "sexy movie" im gonna toss him over the rails. That being said,do you have a general idea of the name of the shop or the floor to which these shops are located?
