hey all! i am not a fan of cell phones people with contraption sticking out of their ear and NO ONE is that important they need to be contacted 24-7 but alas, i am returning to LOS soon and I know how it is... so anyone know the best/cheapest way to get a cell that I might be able to also use in singapore? how are those throw-away phones? even flippant comments will warrant a beer when I arrive...

Go to MBK and buy a cheap second handphone or a very cheap new one. Last time there I got a brand new Nokia for a little over 2k Baht for a friends child (who losses lots!). Then buy a prepaid Phone Card. It will also work in Singapore; just buy a prepaid Sim when you get here!

Just be careful it supports the band (900,1800,1900). You can buy a classic for THB 500 (Nokia 5510) but it only works on a 900 (1-2 call) network.
