I often use Remote Desktop to log on to my office machine running XP pro to do a little work from home or stuff like that.

I even have it set up so I can log on using any computer running internet explorer ie through a web browser. From what I have read it should work from any computer connected to the web.

My office speed is about 2 Mbit down and about 512 kbps up.

I was just wondering if anyone had tried this while in Thailand (BKK) in some of the internet shops and how slow or fast did you find it. I would be connecting to North America from Thailand. I am not talking about doing a ton of work this way just the occasional stuff.

Yes I do know the risks of getting hacked into running a web service on your machine. I run the service on a non standard port not 80 to reduce the risk and use a very strong password. Also my ip is not static but I know how to work around that problem.

I am not sure that the non standard port I use will work in the internet shops as they use a router with all their machines? I could set the port back to 80 while I am away on my trip.

Anyone tried this and what was your experience? Any info and advice you have would help. Hell if I could make this work I might be able to do enough work to actually extend my trip

A laptop is not really an option for me.

Thanks

Bimmher

Well as no one posted a direct reply this is what happened.

Got a PM from a member saying

Hi, bimmher!

I use VNCviewer/server (a freeware from RealVNC - http://www.realvnc.com/download.html) to remote controlling one machine in *****. It's light and it works well. Some Internet cafes won't allow you to download anything, so, I usually come with a copy of the viewer part of the program on a floppy and on a CD (amongst other things), just in case! But I didn't have any problem with the ports used by VNC in any Internet Cafe that I know. The efficiency of this solution greatly depends on the quality and speed of the links from the Internet Cafe to your computer...

Hope this helps...

Cheers,

******

The above is very usefull if Remote Desktop is not an option. With Remote Desktop there is no software so that is what I like.

I deleted the members country and name as I don't have permission to post his PM to me but am sure he would be fine if I had.

So looking for more info I decided to send my ip address and port number to a forum member in BKK and asked him to try the link. Well seems it does work.

What speed will depend on the two sides of the connection but at least I know I can login to my office computer from any computer running internet explorer and without having to download any software.

Happy now as I don't need to think about a laptop for the little work I will be doing.

I really find this feature very usefull in XP Pro. It is just like you are at your own computer but it is a bit slower. Still better then a laptop for my needs.

Anyhow just incase anyone in the future reads this post and wonders what the outcome was sounds like this does work fine.

I haven't tried remote desktop per se, but I do use TightVNC, UltraVNC, and standard ports for other things (like FTP) and seem to have no problems connecting to home from Thailand in general.

More than likely it's going to depend on where you are trying to use the Internet and whether or not they have a firewall in place. If it doesn't work at one place, you may just want to try another.

I have usually aways connected from hotels (as I always bring my laptop), and I can say that the JW Marriott seems to have a very fast and good unrestricted direct connection. Other places I've had to dial up so there isn't any internal infrastructure between you and the Internet.
