In the past I used an online emailing service that allowed me to post a "TO:" address, a message, Post any "FROM:" address I wanted, and send it. All without registering for any account. I use this to send myself info, pics, and as a way to email friends in BKK without it being traceable to me. Those I used are down now. Can any of you post links or email me with ones still active. As a contribution, I offer a few proxy servers to use when you are specifically looking at a blocked site, as there are many in Thailand, or when you simply don't want an internet trail that can be spied on by the next person on the computer.

Ghost in the Mail (Linux) :
http://gitmail.sourceforge.net

There used to be a Windows app very similar to this called "GhostMail". I played around with it way back in '97-98. Can't find a download for it lately though. Trick with GM and GitM is to find an open SMTP server on the Net that will accept inbound without authentication.

HushMail
- http://www.hushmail.com
- This site offers free mail accounts where you can send/receive/store encrypted email. Free accounts [1] expire quickly if no activity (2 weeks or something), and [2] have very limited storage. If you opt to pay the annual fee, your account won't expire and you get more server storage space. Keep in mind, this is not a 'remailer' service, but a way to send secure (encrypted) email to others who either have HushMail accounts or use PGP (exchange public keys in order to communicate securely).

You don't actually need a remailer to accomplish what you want. You can simply download another mail app or a browser/mail app bundle like Mozilla, Firefox, etc. (It is a good idea anyway to have more than one browser.) Then you setup the outgoing mail server settings according to your ISP's instructions except for the account name, user name, return email address - these can all be fake! Make sure you adjust the mail settings to never check for incoming mail and to let your real mail app be the default one. That's it!

Now you can use the alternative mail app for sending mail using your assumed identity. This works because mail servers don't check your id for outgoing mail! The id is only used to identify which mailbox is your's when you ask for your incoming mail.

The advantage of this setup is that you can actually use the alternative browser to go to the web resource you want to forward and then send the link, or page, or whatever using the built-in functions. Any reply to those emails would be sent to the address you specified in the outgoing mail settings as your email address. I use my hotmail account for this purpose and get all responses sent there.

True, simply setting up a second account in Outlook/OE, Thunderbird or Eudora may work to send out bogus mail. Two big assumptions in going this route though:

- Your ISP does not require SMTP authentication or restrict SMTP services by IP/domain
- You are not at all concerned about true anonymity

Security conscious ISP's (like mine) are now starting to require authentication for BOTH receiving AND sending mail. As it sounds your ISP doesn't require SMTP authentication, I'm curious to know if their (open) SMTP servers are listed on a spammers SMTP relay hotlist somewhere.

Believe part of YusefWateef's requirement was to avoid traceability of email. Remailers and the like provide anonymity by stripping off the mail headers (i.e. the audit trail). To me, sending a faked mail from your system, through your own ISP's mailserver (as you suggest), is a-kin to wearing a mask during a bank robbery, but neglecting to wear gloves and leaving your fingerprints all over the place.

Nah, remailers in particular don't really turn my crank, but general topics of privacy, anonymity, and computer/network forensics do. Just passing on what I've read and studied for benefit of the BTF community at-large.
