Hi,
Can anyone please help me as I am trying to find out if it's possible to put a Thai sim card in my mobile phone which is from England. I tried last time I was in bkk but did not have any luck. I have tried places like MBK but they all said I could not do this.

I am from India and I was also told the same thing. A friend from India changed the sim card on her mobile phone and when she returned to India, the phone wouldn't work in India. She had to spend a bomb to get it repaired. So I would think twice before trying it out.

There was a articel in the Nation a couple of weeks ago which said:
DTAC decided yesterday to allow its customers and any handset user to use handsets from anywhere to freely hook up with it as of April 1 (Monday)
I think by now DTAC and also ORANGE -but not AIS- allow to use their SIM cards in any Phone.
As far as I know with AIS you still have to change your IMEI number to one # registered in thailand this can be done in most cases at MBK however on some Phones (Nokia especially) they can't change the IMEI.
Which phone do you have?

You can do it, But need to take your phone to MBK, and pay around 1500 bt, to have them alter the chip - to accept UK/thai numbers, - I've done this with a couple of Nokias from the UK. [not every shop does it, think the one I used was on the 4th floor maybe, or amongst all the mobile phone booths, and called "Cellular"]. You of course can buy a local pre-pay or 1,2 call phone for around 5000bt, and a large part of that you get back as free minutes.

FYI, I was at MBK today and bought one of the 1-2-Call for You SIM cards. Now I have a Thai number for my trip. This is on an old Thai Nokia that I have, don't know how this would work for sets from other places. Cost was 600 baht for the number, which includes 500 baht worth of calls. I had a translator with me (hehe) but still was difficult to figure out the bewildering array of prices for the same thing. They seemed to be charging extra for "pretty" numbers, in the end I went for the cheapest on offer. Also was quoted 750B and 900B for the same deal (as far as I could tell) from other places.
Note that at least one place was willing to let me try one of the SIM chips to see if it would work before I bought.

One more thing to keep in mind with the one-to-call cards. They can call internationally and receive international calls. I was able to call the U.S and also receive incoming calls from the U.S contrary to what the information that comes with the card says.
Also, I have been told that when you use the one-to-call card that your phone number does not show up on caller id. That is not entirely true. My one to call cell phone number showed up on the Cingular cell phone network in the U.S. and the called ID on my one-to-call card picked up the U.S numbers that did not have call id blocked. Just incase any of your are calling your friends in Thailand and don't want them to have your numbers in your home country. Just becarefull.
It is also much cheaper to make calls interntionally from the cell phone using the one-to-call cards, then it is to use the regular phone. I had an 800 baht card and called the U.S for over 30 minutes. I still have some baht left over. When I used the hotel phone, a 27 minute call cost me over $50 U.S.
If you can, I suggest that everyone get the one-to-call card while in Thailand. It's worth it, and the card itself is not expensive. If you are looking for a phone to use the card in, MBK has phones starting at $50 U.S
Lastly, Thailand does not charge for incoming calls. So, once you run out of money on the one-to-call cards, you can still receive incoming calls. You just can not place any outgoing ones.

don't use the 1-2-call as they are still not open for the international cell phones. same as abc described accounts for dtac's "d-prompt" prepaid card for which you can use any international phone without changing the simlock! also calls are cheaper then on 1-2-call but the area coverage in thailand is not so good as with the more stablished ais 1-2-call system.

tpe, i forget to mention phones with pre paid cars already are starting from thb 3,500 nowadays. promotion seen last week for a rasther unfashionable siemens for the dtac or orange system this does also include a credit for call of thb 2,000. only problem is that the phones are locked for the provider you bought them from, so can not change into any other system.
the latest i paid in mbk getting the chip cracked and changed for an old siemens i brought in the co8untry was thb 300, so seems they overcharged you with thb 1,500. but prices are moving down so fast in thailand on mobile phones right now!

According to a friend of mine, they have unlocked their systems. He brought in an unmodified phone (Nokia) from Singapore and it worked.
